My YMCA has installed Strive Smart weight circuits.

http://www.strivefit.com/strivefit/product...ology/index.htm

They have a cam, like Nautilus, but it is adjustable to work different parts of teh mucle group you are working at the time. Normally you would use setting 1, 2 and 3, doing one set of each on each machine.

Set 1 places the most resistance in the middle of the muscle where it is strongest. This is where most equipment focuses.

Set 2 places it at the end of the repetition.

Set 3 places it at the very beginning of the rep, which is the most difficult.

This is really very fine equipment. I highly recommend. It might actually be as effective as correctly done freeweights. The only downside is it is a ghastly bright yellow.

They must have gotten a deal on yellow curb paint.

It has a nasty resemblance to Alabama's electric chair, 'Yellow Mama'. Ugh. But a great workout nonetheless.

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath. When the only one that is repeatedly held up as unjust and unjustifiable is the Zionist project, the term anti-semitism may very well be appropriate. - P*D

Interesting, Mik. Thanks.

Our gym has four different groups of stuff ... free weights, Nautilus-like machines with fixed weight plates, hydraulic-based stuff, and some new stuff (can't remember the name) that's like Nautilus, but you add the weights separately, so it's kind of a Nautilus-free weight hybrid.

The stuff you describe is interesting, because, as you say, each muscle is stronger or weaker during different parts of the range of motion. That's what the principle of 7-7-7 reps is based on (7 reps of the first half of the range of motion, 7 reps of the second half of the range of motion, 7 reps of the whole range of motion). I use that for dumbbell curls.

It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010.

Quirt, this stuff is so cool like that. You know how with free weights or dumbells it is really hard to work the bicep right down by the back of the elbow? The only way I have ever been able to do that very well is with excruciating and time consuming negatives. This stuff works it for you in just a few reps, and I've got the pain to prove it. I can't flex my arms all the way out...

Sounds like good stuff, Mik. With free weights, I usually do a wide grip/stance for the first set, then a medium grip/stance for the second, and then a narrow grip/stance for the third. That way, you're hitting the muscles at all different angles. Give it a try, taking each set to muscle failure, resting only one minute between each set. It's frickin' grueling! :thumb:
