It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010.

Oh, you're not paying for them. When you pay your taxes, that tax money is no longer yours. It's the government's, in just the same way that when you buy a hot dog, the money you spend on it is no longer yours -- it's the vendor's (and you'd never tell him seriously that it's still your money he's putting in his wallet).

As a citizen, you naturally have a certain degree of say in how the government spends it's money -- but in no way is it still your money, nor are you individually paying specifically for anything the government does with collected taxes.

Then why should I pay them?

What a crock Sam. I have a choice to buy or not to buy the hotdog.

I have no choice when it comes to the government stealing my wages.

Why pay taxes?

Because in order to hold together a country of 300,000,000+ citizens (and I don't know how many illegals), and to maintain its security and success world-wide, it takes a little bit of money.

I mean, without tax money, how would the government pay police officers to protect us from criminals... firemen to come to our rescue during house fires... funding for public schools to teach our children....?

There's a cost to living in a country with so many benefits. Do you think we should have a choice whether or not to pay our fair share? Do you think we should have a choice to mooch off of others and not pay a penny, while enjoying all the same benefits? I don't.

Do you really think the government is "stealing" your money, so that you can't live the life of a national moocher?

For me, a bottom line is that there are 300,000,000+ people -- how likely is it that every single one of us is going to agree with every single purchase/investment our government makes? How likely is it that every single one of us is going to agree with every quota our government has us pay? Not very likely -- we'll all disagree with certain things, but that's why we have a government to make the decisions. We all throw in our opinions, and we have lots of debates and lots of representatives, but ultimately someone has to make a decision that a good portion of 300 million people is not going to like... and that's not a bad thing. It's just reality.
