Well, as a Centrist, I hadn't really made up my mind about any of the candidates. I knew I wasn't voting for Hillary. Now I know that I'm not voting for Obama. I was willing to listen to the man and hear what he had to say. Now, I don't care what he has to say. He's unfit to lead this country. There were already doubts about that, given his lack of experience. Being conscious of this, he could have at least ACTED the part. He's failed to do even that, and just further shows that he's not only inexperienced, but apparently, he's stupid and cocky, as well.

Well, he lost my vote.

And yet, he had it before, didn't he?

No, as I said, he lost it. ;)

I know it's not the most important thing in the world.

But it is kinda like someone applying to be a baseball team's coach and forgetting how many outs are in an inning. There are just certain things you need to know and do in such a leadership position.

Sure are. But I don't consider putting your hand over your heart one of them.

I don't see that as detrimental to any part of his job whatsoever, other than respecting the sensibilities of people who think it's important to put one's hand over one's heart.

You don't get the importance of symbolism in public and respect for tradition and protocol from a man who wants to be president?

Of course I do.

I don't get the point of getting all bent out of shape about it, though.

I swear to God, it makes me want to go home and tear up my certificates of honorable discharge, my medals, my awards, my letters of appreciation, any old uniforms I may have kept... I want to shove all of it into the furnace and toss a match in after it. That's what the citizenry of this country makes me feel like. "Support the troops, support the troops," and Congress standing on the steps of the Capitol singing, "God Bless America," and all that other sh!t that was only a show for getting votes and because it would be a nice photo op.

With every passing year, I feel like serving this nation was foolish, and that no one appreciates one bit of it, and no one gives a f'ck. "It's no big deal." "It's nitpicking."

No, it f'cking ISN'T!

:yelling: :cursing:

please, don't feel that way. Believe me, you ARE appreciated by many MANY folks!!!

Thanks, Peggy. I wasn't gunning for sympathy, but I do appreciate the way you feel. Peoples' attitudes just really disgust me, sometimes...

Frank,

I, among others here, do appreciate what you and others currently in the military have given in service to our country. Thank-you.

The problem is we're a dying breed. Makes me glad sometimes that life is terminal. I don't think I want to see what this country will look like in 50 or 100 years. Sad really...

Thank you to you too, Improv. And yeah... I feel the same way you do. Mostly, I feel saddened, disillusioned, a little cynical, and a little angry.

Yeah, I believe it's a big deal to you.

But you were not lined up to be an Obama voter before this. In fact, you've been saying he's positively dangerous, and socialist. So, the fact that you think it's a big deal doesn't exactly deal a death blow to Obama's electoral chances.

Indeed. People show their appreciation in different ways, too. One of the reasons I consider this nitpicking is because I am not a U.S. Soldier. I'm sure my perspective would be different if I were. I hope you don't think that a differing opinion means I don't care about our soldiers, the country in general, or anything else, other than the issue at hand.

same here. It says in the article that sometimes Obama does hold his hand over his heart, and sometimes he doesn't. Well, if that's the case, it seems like sheer laziness. Or worse, half heartedness. I don't want that in a president. How's that going to translate if we're under attack? That's what disgusts and worries me if one of these yahoos gets in the oval office.

No.... But I hope you can also realize that it's a bigger issue than it may seem, and why some people might see it that way.

How that going to translate if we're under attack?

Probably not at all. The pledge of allegiance is a little different than being the victim of a terrorist attack.

Frank--I am completely on your side. I never served, but I am a dedicated believer in American dream and as thankful as anyone can be for the United States Armed Forces that make that dream possible or millions of people.

We aren't free because we are lucky. We are free because good people have served and sometimes died for that freedom.

I'm talking about half heartedness and laziness. Why can't he hold his friggin' hand over his heart during the playing of the national anthem? Why? He's not making a stand or statement on anything. It says he sometimes does and sometimes doesn't. That says to me, he can't take the time to hold a hand over his friggin' heart.

I find it disgusting. But then I'm old fashioned. I think men should remove their hats during the national anthem. (Not to mention at the dinner table).

There are certainly better reasons not to vote for him. That gaseous rhetoric he is passing off as a "plan" comes to mind.

All it says to me is that he sometimes doesn't hold his hand over his heart. I read nothing into his character at all.

While we're at it, I'd suggest that holding your hand over your heart is not a requirement for reverence, respect, being attentive, etc. It's not like he was on his cell phone or not paying attention.

I guess I'm not old fashioned at all, since I see no problem at all with the hat thing. (Oh man what a fun thread that was. ^_^ )
