If I were in Britain and the British anthem were played, I would stand and place my hand over my heart, or whatever the custom is.

I'm not sure what you're asking. It's respect for the flag and the principles and ideals that it represents, as well as respect for the sacrifices that men and women have made for those principles and ideals. I feel pride, honor, a sense of unity, patriotism, respect, and reverence.

Would you - with the British national anthem? (This is what Billy Connolly, a hilarious Scottish comedian, thinks of the national anthem - Billy Connolly sketch )

Yes, that is what I meant. The reason I asked is because on 11th November at 11am there is a two minutes' silence, during which one is supposed to think of the dead and those who gave their lives during the wars, and during which I am never able to keep my mind on the subject, and, terrible though this may be, it wanders off in Henry Sugar style. I think the two minutes' silence is a wonderful thing, and that we will remember them, but I would rather not be in company during it - I feel somewhat ashamed that I'm not thinking about what I'm supposed to be thinking about.

 Good luck deciphering the ramble!

Well, don't feel badly about it. I guess if you decided to start chatting on your cell phone during that two minutes, that might be disrespectful on the order of what Mr. Obama has done, IMO.

Well, there you have it. To most people, it's apparently no big deal. To me, it's quite a big deal. Then again, I'm sure that those who think it's no big deal, haven't worn a uniform, buried comrades, or know what it is to serve.

k... It's no big deal... How many of you who think it's no big deal, owned or flew an American flag before 9/11? How many of you ran out and bought an American flag on 9/12 or after?

It's no longer the fad it was, I guess... Patriotism is something like last year's shoe style or something, I guess. I'm glad that when I was serving, I kept the ideals and principles of my country in mind. Most of its citizenry cares for nothing but entertaining themselves to death, and don't give a sh!t about anything but themselves.

Au contraire, this is nitpicking at its finest.

Come on guys, get a grip. He's human. Maybe he was distracted by some fine piece of ass near him.

Heh - it's funny you say that. A couple years ago I was working as a temp in a scratchyoureyesout-boring office, and true to form no one spoke to me, as I was a temp, and I'd completely forgotten 11am.. So I was photocopying away, until someone eventually tapped me on the shoulder and told me to STFU. Judging by the rest of the silence they only told me about 1m30 seconds in... It was probably one of the most embarassing moments of my life so far.

Sarah, I'll take a crack at this. . .

For me, it's a pledge of allegiance, not just to a cloth flag, but for what it represents. And to me, it represents in large part the ONE thing we have in common, all 300 million of us. One huge, often dysfunctional family, but nonetheless one family. We can argue, fight, always try to improve, beat each other over the head (so to speak), but the act of placing a hand over the heart shows that we are united, and we care about our country and for each other. It's my respect for everyone else ("for which it stands"), "one nation, under God, with liberty and justice for all" - the often unattainable but always pursued goal.

And then we can get back to beating up on each other. . .

Oh no - what I meant was just that I find it hard to think about something for two minutes (ok, I'm not sure if this is making me look better!), like when someone says, "Don't think about candles." Don't get me wrong; I do think about them, just perhaps not as and when I should.

I swear to God, it makes me want to go home and tear up my certificates of honorable discharge, my medals, my awards, my letters of appreciation, any old uniforms I may have kept... I want to shove all of it into the furnace and toss a match in after it. That's what the citizenry of this country makes me feel like. "Support the troops, support the troops," and Congress standing on the steps of the Capitol singing, "God Bless America," and all that other sh!t that was only a show for getting votes and because it would be a nice photo op.

With every passing year, I feel like serving this nation was foolish, and that no one appreciates one bit of it, and no one gives a f'ck. "It's no big deal." "It's nitpicking."

No, it f'cking ISN'T!

I thought someone Pwned on this before - now that I think about it I received an email a good couple of months ago w/the photo. Anyway, could be Hillary stirring up trouble.

What I've been learning lately about Obama leaves me in a state of shock. I can't believe I might support Hillary over him (thank God there is a Republican - lots of them in fact - I can vote for).

I think this happened back in October or earlier.

I just received it in an email as well, thought I would share.

There are plenty of veterans who are currently serving, or who have served, who are democrats, and probably will vote democrat. I think he's lost that much of the vote. I don't see Obama's move as anything other than political suicide. Who's he hoping to impress by this little stunt? I think it's going to mean more in the long run, than people (Obama included) think it does.

Frank, I've yet to hear of anyone who would have voted for him before, but for whom this has changed their mind. (But then, I haven't read through the whole thread yet.) Do you know anyone personally who is willing to say that they were thinking of voting for him, but this episode has changed their mind?

Yup,

Mr. O. Hussein can do plenty of little things for the Hillary campaign. I'm sure she'll keep track.

You would think this might have occured to him as he decided not to acknowledge the flag as those around him were.

Ah, he's young yet. Give him a few years.
