I recently moved to Virginia. I took my car in to get the annual inspection (required in Virginia) and it was rejected because of a couple minor things I needed to get fixed (tighten parking brake, replace fog lamp light bulb, etc). So it had a rejection sticker where the "passed" sticker usually is. Long story short, a cop pulled me over and gave me a ticket for not having a "passed" inspection sticker. Apparently the law is that a cop can give you a ticket for driving with a rejected inspection sticker, EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE TO DRIVE IN ORDER TO GET THE ITEMS IN YOUR CAR FIXED!!!!!!!!!1 I'm not bitter, I understand he was doing his job, but HOW ON EARTH can a law exist where it says you have to get your car inspected but if it fails and you need to fix something, it's against the law to drive your car to a mechanic to get it fixed!?!?!?! Any legal thoughts here? |

I've driven in and out of Virginia and I do recall their cops are a bit on the strict side. I got pulled over on my way to Virginia Beach one day, on a freeway through Richmond, and got pulled over for doing 20 over the speed limit. Of course it was on a big downgrade and he's sitting there waiting at the bottom of the hill. He comes up to me like I was some major felon and at first told me he had to arrest me because it wasn't just speeding, it was reckless driving. After his scare tactic he wrote me up a ticket instead, mandatory appearance one, and I had to take a day off work and drive all the way down to Richmond again where the judge reduced my fine substantially. |

This really is a small world. Yesterday I noticed a crack in my windshield. This caused me to notice that my Virginia inspection expired in November. I went immediately to the inspection station and of course flunked because of the crack, but at least I'm not expired. No driving it now until the crack is fixed on Friday. Once you flunk you can only drive to get it fixed. I know someone who was stopped twice on the way to get it fixed. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. Usually in most states you can get a faulty equipment ticket nullified by demonstrating a timely rectification of the fault. Of course, in Virginia like a lot of other hillbilly backwater locations they may just want to pounce on anything that willl generate income. |

Oklahoma had a vehicle inspection regime in place when I first moved here but the legislature ened it shortly after I arrived. I had to endure one inspection and it seemed to entail a couple of overall clad guys circling the vehicle a few times and filling out the paperwork. |

In New Jersey I had to take my car annually to get inspected, which sucked. They were state inspection stations, though, so they had nothing to gain by not passing me. If anything, they probably prefer to pass whatever possible and move people out of their hair, since those places are always crowded. Here in MD, though, you get your car inspected only once, BUT- you have to go to an auto shop to get it done. Obviously, these people have MUCH to gain by telling you they can't pass you until this, this, and that are repaired! What's more the national norm- state inspection stations, or local auto shop inspections? |

I recently moved to Virginia also. Screw Virginia. Screw their traffic laws and their inspections. It would be a horrendous waste of time and money to get everything squared away and for what? If I ever get pulled over it'll be "yes sir officer, just passing through." I'll delay the process until Rapture if I have to. |

Actually, MD's inspection requirements vary from county to county. Only reason I know this is because my home county is still the one in the state to never require vehicle inspections. Milking that for all that's worth at the moment. |

Illinois has bi-annual inspections at a state-run facility. Doesn't take long - as long as you don't have a line. They check your lights, overall integrity of the vehicle and emissions. Takes 10 minutes - other than the line. |

I did that back in '96. Problem is insurance. If a vehicle that is insured in Illinois (please, don't pronounce the 's') is in an accident, and the insurer finds out that it's registered in Cheeseland®, they may deny the claim. Sales tax is also lower in Kenosha (where we bought the car) than it is in Cook County. If you buy a car in Wisconsin and register in Illinois, you have to pay the difference in sales tax to Illinois.Bastards. |

Every other year is not too bad, but it is a PIA. What gets me about is is that one truck belching black smoke from its exhaust is allowed to go down the expressways without an inspection, but my Subaru is considered a potential environmental disaster. It couldn't be because the truckers unions contribute.... Never mind. |

I'm thinking that vehicles past a certain age have mandatory inspections or vehicles that have been in accidents. And up the fines for those failures. Do any states do this? At present it seems unfair, a method to simply generate revenue. Can't citizens help change these laws? |

It was almost a month exactly after getting the failed inspection. The mechanic was delayed in fixing the car, and had to order a special part, otherwise it would have only taken a week or two to get fixed. The unfortunate part about the story is I got the ticket literally 12 hours before I planned to (and did) take my car in for re-inspection (and it passed) the next day. Talk about bad timing. |

From what the mechanic told me, cops are allowed to give tickets even if you are driving to get it fixed. I could be wrong of course, but that's what I've heard...and why I started this thread, since I found that law to be incredibly odd. You are required to get your car fixed, but you aren't allowed to drive it to the mechanic! ![]() Of course, they say the court is reasonable, but that means I have to spend *my* time to plead my case. There should certainly be a 60-day grace period on the books or something. |
