If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead

We just spent a week in Destin. I am going to tell you for certain, the best seafood in Florida, if not the US, is in the panhandle of Florida. It was just unbelieveable stuff... right off the boat, best everything I ever ate. best amberjack (brought some back for dinner tonight), certainly the best shrimp I ever ate, best crabcakes.... wow. Great gumbo too, but not better than Louisiana. I'm telling you this place is just rife with 'old Florida' seafood restaurants right on the beach. Too much fun. I know the area is called the 'redneck riviera', but it is anything but. The beaches are the best I have seen outside Siesta key... the finest white powder sand that is so soft on your feet. One nice thing too is that the gulf is to the south of you - you get noth incredible sunrises AND sunsets. I highly recommend. |

Oh, no. You can't tell Marylanders that Florida has the best crab ANYTHING, unless it's a disease. |
| And how are you today? | |

I'm a native Floridian and I grew up there. The best seafood in the U.S. is in Hawaii- by far. |

I've had seafood in both places, and I have to agree with Daniel ... for most stuff, Hawaii is better. But each area has its own speciality. I defy you to get a better lobster than in Maine or Boston ... the best salmon is in the Pacific Northwet ... the best crabs are in Maryland ... and so on. |

When I moved here I couldn't believe the quality of the seafood-- certainly it's the fact that we're surrounded by a vast amount of ocean and there's lots of choice and very little pollution. But you are absolutely right about regional choices. Good point. |

Not a typo, but I cannot take credit for it. I believe it was coined by Pianojuggler over at WTF ... or, at least, he's the first one I saw use it. |

Oh, no way - get to Hilton Head and go to Hudson's On The Docks - best crabcakes on God's green earth. (There's another Hudson's - On the Beach, but don't go there - not as good). |

Hey Mik: I got a project in Pensacola that I took MS to last July -- I love the coast there, and we did have wonderful seafood at Pensacola Beach. Redneck Riviera indeed! Wasn't it pretty cold -- too cold for the water? |

Not really - it was about 70 and bright sunshine - the water wasn't that cold - certainly not as cold even as the Pacific in summer. But I only went in up to my knees or so. |

The water in Florida, even Destin/PCB is downright tropical compared to the Pacific. Brrrrr.... |

No, we did not get there - but there are so MANY good houses. We ate at Crab Trap (on Okaloosa island, not further west), Pompano Joe's and The Back Porch. All three were great. The Back Porch had the all timne best fried shrimp I ever had anywhere, by a mile. The other two nights we had fresh grilled fish and big pots of jumbo shrimp at my Dad's condo. |

Yep. Red tide sucks... On one of my certification dives, we dove the wreck of the Black Bart, an old tug boat off of Panama City Beach. It was in May and viz was fantastic. I dove the same site again, about six months later. At least, I think it was the same site. LOL... The only way I knew we were diving it, was by putting my hand out and touching it, because I sure the hell couldn't SEE it!! You know the viz is bad when you put your gauges right up to your mask and shine your dive light on them, and you STILL can't read 'em!!
