I Owe It All To John D'Oh

I'm not going to disagree that it's a waste of resources to use an ER for the sniffles, or a back ache. But who does the triage? I don't think the general populace trusts the hospital to decide who gets kicked back out to the street. And they're the ones who vote. In the current system, the patients do the triage. But you don't like the current system. Do you want a government arbiter to do the triage? Someone neutral, appointed by the government, who sits there and decides who is serious enough to get seen, and who isn't? I doubt that's what you want. And making people pay isn't the answer either, because then they get less health care, and wind up with more serious conditions that went undiagnosed and potentially could have been cured at an earlier stage. So, realistically, how would your "get the hell out of here, your sniffles aren't serious enough to warrant an ER visit" work? |

You can't refuse to see a patient, but you can triage them to a long wait. But some guys won't leave, which is what we are trying to accomplish...I never could understand why someone would wait 14 hours to be seen for a common cold... |

If you do not have health insurance your access to health care is already restricted. If you are broke and have no insurance, you are not able to go to any doc you want. In fact most people with no insurance skip things like checkups and visits most would consider normal. I feel like the health care issue is a big deal because I think a we are all created equal in regards to rights for basic necessities like food/shelter and health care. Call me a liberal. |

Jolly, we dealt with this, too. Family members of military personnel would come to the ER with their whole family, after church on Sunday. "We've all been sick for the past week...." because they don't want to go to regular Sick Call in the Outpatient clinic on Monday through Friday. In the civilian world, what's been nice to see, is Urgent Care clinics springing up. If you're sick but can't get in to see your doctor, or don't have a family physician, but you aren't sick enough to warrant an emergency room visit, you can drop into Urgent Care. Usually the wait is minimal, and thanks to 24-hour pharmacies like Walgreen's, a person can get in, get seen, and get out, usually within an hour. It's a system that works... I've been on staff in our little 2-bed ER, plus one private exam room, and had an MVA, a heart attack, and a woman in labor with imminent delivery, all at the same, while a Sunday Afternoon Sniffles family takes up space in the chairs in the hallway, whining and complaining. I've turned to them and said, "As soon as we deliver this baby, stabilize and medevac our cardiac patient, and as soon as we treat this car accident patient, then the physician may have time to attend to you, but otherwise, if you don't want to wait, you are welcome to visit the Outpatient Clinic on Monday." Pffffft... People are stupid, self-absorbed, and ignorant, for the most part. Barely above the evolutionary level of livestock.
