The state winds up paying the health care costs for people who need emergency health care, and don't have insurance.

So it's perfectly rational for the state to try to push them all into private insurance. And perfectly rational to have an enforcement mechanism, like fines.

You could also let them die in the streets if they get critically ill and don't have insurance, but we don't do that here.
It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010.

Yeah, its conceptually not unlike taxing people for public healthcare provision. Difference is the provision is private, but the obligation is still there.

And it's all courtesy of the Mittster, everyone's favorite conservative!

Why fear Hillary's public health care proposals? Elect Mitt, and he'll do it as a conservative!

I, for one, am struggling to get insurance coverage for my 24 year old daughter. Because of a history of seeing a counselor for the last year and a half, and the fact that she takes thyroid medicine, she has been denied coverage by 3 companies (of course, company #2 asks "Have you ever been....").

So, what is one to do in that situation, where one has made good-faith efforts to get insurance and cannot? Pay the fine? 'Splain me that.

While I don't know the details, I'm sure MA is a "guaranteed issue" state, i.e. part of the system in MA prevents participating insurance companies from denying individuals.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

Just curious, Mik, how do you feel about state laws that require drivers to carry car insurance?

Jon apparently learned more about Illinois ... in Massachusetts, the way it works is that companies that offer individual policies must offer them to all comers ... can't deny you on the basis of past medical history.

Which is why the policies are very, very not cheap.

Thanks, Jon. She's looking at CHIP. But, as Quirt says, it's very very not cheap.

I don't know. I did say that you learned more about Illinois than I know. I just know how Massachusetts works.

Edit ... as to the highlighted part, maybe it doesn't differ at all. So maybe I'm just repeating what you already said.

Just curious, Mik, how do you feel about state laws that require drivers to carry car insurance?

There is no relationship between the two issues. Operating a motor vehicle is a privilege and a convenience. While doing so one can cause grievous harm to others. Society has the right to dictate laws that require you to be able to remedy the damage you cause as a condition of that privilege.

All one must be to be eligible for Romney's fines is turn 18, as far as I can tell.

The point, dear Jon, is that with driving, one has a choice. In the Massachusetts health system, one evidently does not.

Yeah, you have a choice. Live in New Hampshire, just over the border.

I think he's still on it even though the poor guy fell off the mountain.

I had my wife in the ER Monday, R/O a DVT right leg (only way to get an ultrasound).

The place was popping. Some serious stuff...couple of MVA's, a renal failure case, an MI and a couple of tachycardias...some less serious stuff like my wife...and a whole lot of crap.

Sniffles, snorts, drug addicts, back pain x 2 months,...the regular stuff that clogs up the system to no end.

We don't need to let people die in the street, but maybe we need to restrict their access to healthcare...I can't see how giving everybody insurance helps the problem.
