New Years Resolutions; ...list them here!

HOLY CARP!!!
I don't normally make resolutions, but I do have a goal so I'm going to post that here.

I want to do a more thorough job planning history and geography lessons. Unfortunately, the required curriculum for these two courses is pretty dull. While quite a few of my kids talk about how much they like history now when they've always hated it, I still feel like I must be boring them to tears. So I need to plan ahead, put a bit more thought into those lessons, and try to hook more of my kids.

i sincerly would love to run the nyc marathon, but im not sure i can do it, but im bold enough to post it as a 2008 goal. the marathon is in nov 2008, (although u need to pass a lottery for entrance) and i really want to go for it.

things against me:
-im out of shape, havent ran in a long time.
-ive got too much weight, im at my heaviest at 83 kg (182 lbs) and i would like to run it at somewhere between 70-75 kg (155-165). that means not just exercise but also a diet to deal with.
-ive got a chronic posterior tibial tendonitis which is bothering me, after all day on my feet, and running will not help this. ive gone to a foot person to make me orthotics for my shoes to help relieve the stress on the posterial tibial tendon and i hope that will ease the tenderness. i dont want to start taking anti inflammatories if not necessary.

be that as it may, ive started 1/1/08 waking up half an hour earlier and going out in the pre sunrise darkness and run.

things going for me:
-i can be stubborn as mule when i give myself a mission, and at my age, my feeling is, its either now or never, and i want to run a marathon, before they have to wheel me in a wheel chair marathon.
-dont smoke
-im not a couch potato, i can run 15-20 min without getting too winded so im not starting from scratch.
-ive got about 10 months to get ready.

if i dont get the ny marathon on lottery, i will look at other available races in winter of 2008.

:D
NYC 2007 was my very first Bach. I'd only been running 18 months prior. I never ran as a kid or young adult. I'm definitely not an athlete or runner chick. I'm on the obese side of things in my mind.

I'd only did 2 Half marathons along training for NYC. My training was 20 weeks. I did my training via an Internet course. I did in-store group 5 & 10K clinics, & a Half marathon internet thing prior (when I first started running). Lots of info out there for you to read, look at, join up for.

I'd recommend you:
1) Get yourself into a marathon training course starting June or July. And prior to starting that course do,
2) Learn proper techniques for stretching your leg muscles. Build your core too b/c you'll need that to endure training up to 42 Kms in November. Learn how to rest. Teach yourself of diet and do not deprive yourself of protein and carbs while training. Trust me .. you'll be consuming plenty of calories & losing that weight along the way. Losing weight may help your posterior tibial tendon problems some. I embraced anti-inflammatories gladly when my mileage was at it's highest - but for leg muscle recovery - prior to both Half marathons.
3) Do a self-program (4-5 days/wk) that will bring you upcomfortably to running a 10Km Base by ~ June using a Run (10 min):Walk (1 min) approach (you'll also use this for marathon training distances). Take a course, google how (if you've run in the past), or buy a book. Just ideas for ya. But building one's 10K base of endurance and strength is so important, ... it's also fun, motivating and fairly gentle on the body if you use a Run:Walk strategy and follow your training:rest:nutrition:stretching plans.
4) Build your base of emotional support early on as you train for it Bach. You'll find the training itself to be so very rewarding, .. like physically, mentally, emotionally. Kluurs, SAS, 89th, 2 RL friends & others were so very supportive when I started out. You'll need such helpers along the way. :)

I had trained for NYC but ended up injured 6 weeks prior (plantar fascitiis). I was in a fair bit of pain, pretty upset. When I was able to walk, I did my training 'runs' by walking the last month. But hey, I showed up there & did it any way. I moved myself to the back of the pack and discovered there were thousands of dedicated walkers doing it. Yup. Being there was such a rush: I actually ran lots of it. I suppose those endorphins kicked in b/c my foot pain was bearable til the very end. I was still flying the next day. I took pics along the way for myself & others (from all over the world) ... all who were there for the very same reasons I was. I finished, and the event photos they sent reveal a very smiling Katie, despite the foot pain. I even got to meet & dine with some good people from the WTF while I was in NYC. Good people.

Can you apply as an International Applicant with the Guaranteed Entry Program? You'd avoid the lotto. I was an International Entrant for 3 reasons:
1) At the age of 45, I wanted to do it now & not wait til my body was 3 yrs older through the lotto system. I don't know how many more years I'll have running.
2) The International Travel Partner here clued me into 'the realities' with the lotto system confirming how dismall my chances really were getting in year 1.
3) Transportation and logistics, at 4 a.m. race day scrambling to Staten Island, in the dark, in the cold, are wild in that city with 40K runners, 100s of buses, cabs, ferries, etc. .. royal chaos for me, scared as sh*t, doing 42K for my very first time. Yet you know this, having lived there.
My advice: If you can, seek guaranteed entry and the comraderie of a travel leader and group. You'll sleep easier prior & on the ground at Staten Island before the race :)

I told some others, but running the NYC Marathon rated right up there along with giving birth. It's an experience you'll never ever forget. SAS started a thread over at the WTF; I posted more there: http://well-temperedforum.groupee.net/eve/.../9450016915/p/1 Here's a pic: [PLEASE nobody Link To or Quote these things]:

Guess What Bach?
Come February, I'm signing up as an International Entrant for ING NYC again. This time I want to improve enough to say, I ran all of it.
I sure hope you consider it Bach. I'm pretty well hooked running (as slow as I am). It helps my body, mind & soul.

1. Eat healthier. I eat total crap.
2. Cut out the sodas.
3. Make it to the gym regularly and consistently. I go regularly, but not consistently enough.
4. Practice piano regularly and consistently.

If I do #'s 1, 2, and 3, the weight will take care of itself.

I'm with you on 3 and 4.

MS and I eat fairly healthily. By "soda" do you mean with sugar or diet? I've been drinking diet soda for a few years now after I cut out a lot of "bad" carbs. Then I saw some article about how diet soda is bad for you. Ya just can't win!

That said, I've been drinking more club soda, which seems to be more refreshing when I am thirsty, and sometimes I add a splash of juice for taste.
The dogma lives loudly within me.

I can't abide sugar-free sodas. It tastes like I'm drinking carcinogens.

Over the past ten years, I've probably been drinking sugary sodas for three of them. I quit for a year or two, then go back.

When I quit, it's just plain water or the extravangance (San Pellegrino) for me.

Yeah, when I drink juice, it's either grapefruit or cranberry. Something nice and tart.

Although grape juice is heart-healthy. When I told my doctor that a glass of wine a day is supposed to be good for you, he glared at me and told me to drink a little grape juice instead.

Let's see...

1. meet Elton John   :hearts:  (yeah, I know it will never happen, but I can dream, can't I?)

2. Get all my characters in WoW to lvl 70 with epic flyers/flight form before the expansion comes out later this year.

3. Gank all the a$$holes that ganked me, especially when I was in STV. :veryangry:

Oh yeah and all that eat healthy, lose weight, exercise, play more piano rubbish. :D

It's a bitch getting old. My cholesterol meds don't allow grapefruit.

You know cranberry juice is a natural diuretic...

The founding of the bulk of the world's nation states post 1914 is based on self-defined nationalisms. The bulk of those national movements involve territory that was ethnically mixed. The foundation of many of those nation states involved population movements in the aftermath.
