...
I'd also love to try a triathlon, but I don't think the swimming portion would work out for me.  I have great endurance in the water, but never learned the correct technique.  I don't put my face in the water for freestyle.  I'd probably look very silly in a race.  ^_^

I did do a light, local duathlon on two separate occasions, though.  Run 2.1 mi, bike 15, run 2.1 again.  It was lots of fun (it was Halloween themed), but my legs felt like pure LEAD going into that last run!  It can be hard switching back and forth between activities like that, but ultimately I would think maybe it's less exhausting on specific muscles than, say, would be a marathon, since each activity stresses different muscles.

You rock Opti !!
You must be in great shape. :)

I'd like to do a duathon as well. One with a mountain biking portion would be cool. Someday. Could be a stepping stone to a 3 sport thing. Maybe. I need to be in better shape. :) .

This year I said I'd get my stroke assessed up at a rec centre that does triathlon courses. They do stroke improvement training with that. I was a good swimmer when I was young, but it's been years for me. I haven't done any distance swims in open water either. There's so much to consider contemplating triathlon. Kind of scary actually.

My hubby is pushing for me to train for something combining running & biking 'cause he's so much into road biking & wants to do hill training with me (long story with that). Road bikes, riding on roads scare me more than trails and fat tires (long story there too).

My key--> I ADORE it.

I think that's very key to "sticking with it." I hate indoor exercise, so if for some reason I couldn't do my outdoors activities I think I'd be a pretty hefty girl, what with my eating habits. :P When the weather gets pretty chilly, I just do running.

I'm definitely not in the shape I was in back in high school, when I ran cross-country and track year-round. Nothing'll get you in shape like a coach barking time splits at you from across the track! But I enjoy running more now that I don't have the competitive aspect. And the biking, I've been at that for about 10 years now, and am looking to get more serious about it. I'm starting to get into light maintenance, and a goal for this year is to do a couple long rides- maybe day-long, or overnight.

My ideal job is to be a multi-lingual bike tour guide. I'm actually starting to seriously look into that. :)

It sounds like your husband is a great motivator! Road biking can be scary if you don't pick the right roads. As much as I like to explore on my bike, I usually drive through a route before riding it, to check to make sure the roads are ok. Some of the backroads around here are windy and hilly with no shoulder, and I would NOT venture on them on bike. I also get scared when there are steep hills I have to go down (which doesn't happen too often around here). I always visualize something absurd, like a wheel popping off and me eating pavement. I think mountain biking down a trail would scare the poopy out of me. :D

I don't like downhill runs either, Opti! Makes me feel skeered, and I've been riding a whole lot for in excess of 30 years. Way in excess, but it would be rude to me to quantify how much!

I could never do the running for a triathlon...which is too bad, I'd smoke the riding and swimming. Oh well. Old is old :P

It sounds like you Opti and you Deb are in awesome shape.
[Aside to Deb - I always wanted one of those Bianchi road bikes - it's that color ya know ;) .]
I remain a slug with the running I do, but I sure enjoy being outside doing it. It's also a good way to travel & see new places (with events). I retreat indoors for the winter; it's too cold for me up here.
I could learn lots from you folks. :)
Being multi-lingual bike tour gal sounds like a dream job Opti. Hubby 'dreams' of doing a bike tour in Europe someday. I hear a fair amount of wine is consumed during these rides (heh .. you need lots of cals to bike).

First of all, you’re going to have to make up your mind what the bike’s primary purpose is. There are different types of bikes for different purposes.

Make sure you buy a bicycle with an aluminum frame!! You won’t have to worry about rust.

If you’re going to race in triathlons, then you’ll need a racer. If it’s for commuting and recreational purposes, then consider a touring bike or a hybrid.

Designed for speed but not comfort, a racer has a shorter wheel base and geometry suited for speed and quick turns. A touring bike has a longer wheel base than a racer and geometry suited for longer riders where comfort becomes more important. A hybrid bike is a cross between a mountain and a touring bike. A hybrid has the same 27” wheels as a touring bike but the wheels and tires are wider. Also, hybrids have a mountain bike’s straight handle bar instead of a tourer’s drop handle bars.

Suspension systems are standard equipment on some hybrids. A suspension system makes bicycle riding more enjoyable. It’s better that the bike absorb the road shock rather than your body. Some hybrids have a built-in front fork shock absorber and/or a seat post shock absorber.

I have both a dual suspension mountain bike and a hybrid bike. I like them both for different reasons.

Oh, and by the way: don’t buy a bike lock that uses a short length tubular shaped key because they can easily be picked with a Bic pen. I once posted a warning about them here: http://z10.invisionfree.com/The_New_Coffee...topic=27549&hl=

My hero. I love Peewee and saw that movie first run.

Ruebens was the best thing in kids' entertainment in many a year. It is a shame that his carrer nosedived when he got popped for cinematic chicken-chokin'.

Yeah.... I saw it first run, too. Pee Wee ROCKED!!

Eh... How he ended up was somewhat of a disappointment. (I'll bet Dottie was just crushed....)

Most people didn't get the humor in 'it's in the basement of the Alamo' - kind of a Texas inside joke.
