HOLY CARP!!!

Upgraded to iTunes 7.5 this morning, and now I can't hook up the iTouch to the PowerBook -- because the new version of iTunes won't work with iTouch unless iTunes is running on OS X 10.4.10 or later. My PowerBook is running 10.3.9. The only way I can sync that iTouch now is to connect it to a Windows machine, and it works with both XP and Vista! This is so stupid! Bad Apple! |

Finally
|
So, you want a device that became available in late 2007 to be software compatible with an operating system that stopped production in April 2005? |

In hind sight, I recognized that I might have over-reacted. You asked a good question. Still, I am deeply disappointed that so much dependency is built into the OS itself for iTouch inter-op that there's not a way for iTouch to work with 10.3.x, not even with "reduced" functionality. As it is, while iTunes/iTouch remain "current release (Vista)" and "current - 1 release (XP)" compatibility with the Windows world, iTunes/iTouch supports only "current release (10.4)" with the Mac OS world. Even then, the 10.4.10 requirement is rather strict -- what if you are in 10.4.9 and can't upgrade to 10.4.10 for some reason (e.g., you have a critical app that's not fully compatible with 10.4.10 yet)? May be Apple rushed the iPhone/iTouch a bit, may be Apple "have to" operate this way or Apple is wouldn't be Apple. In any case, I'm disappointed. I've been a happy Apple/Macintosh user since LC III. I've been disappointed at Apple exactly twice -- (1) when Apple built a video iPod that didn't follow the conventional AV cable specification, so you either have to buy Apple's expensive AV cable or know how to switch the conventional AV cable the right way to work with that iPod, and (2) yesterday when I found out about iTouch's total incompatibility with 10.3.x. I've been using each Apple machine I've bought for 5~7 years (I'm still on the first generation Airport, my G3 iMac is still going strong), and Apple products have maintained a pretty good record for being rather "future proof" and "forward compatible" in my experience. So I'm surprised that iTouch didn't even get the effort to achieve "current - 1 release" OS compatibility. Sorry if it read like I was being too demanding of Apple.

I like that sig. quote, Frank. And I really liked the Hunter Thompson one you had on before that one.
