Interesting post. I agree deer are a huge public nuisance, especially the rate at which they cause accidents. Even 30m out of NYC its a problem. By the way - other than humans, what are their natural enemies that should be keeping them in check? Wolves? |

Edit- The deer were there first...Now people move in destroy the natural habitat, impose a gridwork of fences and roads, systematically eliminate any predator that would kill livestock (inadvertently acheiving the same for deer). Then when the deer population explodes, forcing farmers to cull their numbers. Nature ussually controls animal numbers in a series of amazing checks and balances. We are going the same way as much of Europe, where there is no such thing as "wildlife" in many areas. Just a memory and some old paintings to show that wilderness even existed there ever. Who knows how the deer will fare. |

So do you not believe that deer are an issue, FR? I'm not sure from your post. What's wrong with killing them anyway? They're mighty tasty. |

The problem with deer, is that most of their natural predators have been killed off, so without that system of checks and balances, they will overbreed, many will starve, and they will become a greater nuisance than they are, now. Yes, we broke it. Yes, we need to fix it. I don't personally hunt, but am grateful for those that do, as long as it's done responsibly, with respect to the animal: i.e. most of the animal is used, rather than wasted. |

My thoughts exactly. I've never hunted, but I've helped to do everything else to prepare the meat of easily over 850 deer, and we made sure to use as much as possible, including the hides, antlers, and pluck. |

I am fine with hunting. I love fresh game meet. My favorite is elk. I am frustrated because it saddens me to see the gentrification of the countryside. I know that even with the hunting season there are still too many deer. The solution implied is to start hunting deer not for sport, not for meat, but simply to get their numbers to a point where they are no longer a nuisance. I think that the destruction of wild animals in such a way is wrong. Sorry if my last post came off a anti-hunting. |

I wouldn't want you to apologize if it was meant as anti-hunting, I was just confused. In the county where my mom lives deer that are shot for purposes of culling still need tags, and a special permit must be obtained. |

After shooting these deer, do they then just leave them to rot? It means that going out and killing thousands of deer for culling purposes will become S.O.P. Doesn't that strike you as misplaces priority, warped values? Lets seek a solutions to mitigate animal vehicular collisions and to protect crops instead of letting a state-sponsored slaughter occur. It is wrong to manage wildlife this way. |

What are you thinking? Maybe state sponsored condoms for the deer? |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. No, the deer aren't left to rot, because people value the meat around that area, and most permit holders are farmers. |

So, what exactly is the difference between hunting for sport and leaving them to rot? it does no honor to the animal, and I find hunting for sport more sickening than hunting for culling purposes. I just don't get it. |

That's what I'm getting at. I am trying to say that wild animals have honor even if they are overpopulated. Especially if the areas where they used to roam free are now just people's farms and subdivided property. A gridwork of roads and fences where there used to be nothing. For that I feel remorse and sadness at yet another way "man" has affected nature....for the worse. I used the term "sport" hunting to mean that a sportsman will not shoot an animal if he/she is not certain that it is a good, clean, killing shot. It is not sport to gut shoot a deer from 400 yds. It is not sport to shoot a deer in the ass as it's bounding away. It is a true huter that waits until they have a good shot for the sake of being humane and honoring the life of that animal. I totally agree with you about sport hunting that is killing for the "sport" of it. That is bad. |

Well, state sponsored sterilization is really not that bad an idea. But it's too slow a fix -- you need to wait for the current generation to die off naturally. I think understand Free Rider's notion of respecting the dignity and honor of other animals. And forced sterilization won't cut it by this measure. No bright idea to fix this, really. We do live in a culture that put human interest above other life forms' interests. |

You want to cull the number of deer in your area? Drastically? 1. Import a half-dozen coonasses. 2. Tell them hunting season is closed. 3. Tell them jack-lighting is illegal. Period. 4. Give them free shells, rice, bell pepper, onions and celery. It'll take a couple of weeks to solve the deer problem........ |

Ohhhhh..... I always assume hunting for sport implies well....sport. Just hunting for antlers. I've seen plenty of deer that obviously suffered due to poor shots. Gut shot, 8 slugs in them, I've even seen 2 bambi with their spots still on them and had to help skin them.
