Quote:

LOS ANGELES — In the recording industry’s latest move away from its reliance on digital locks to reduce piracy, the Warner Music Group said on Thursday that it would sell songs and albums without anticopying software through Amazon’s fledgling digital music service.

The shift by Warner Music is another step in the decline of copy-protection software, which has led to consumer confusion over the jumble of incompatible schemes governing the use of digital music players and downloaded songs.

Warner is the third of the four major music corporations to reconsider its use of so-called digital rights management software, known by its initials as D.R.M., and offer its catalog in the unrestricted MP3 format. Sony BMG Music Entertainment has continued to hold out, though it is expected to experiment with selling MP3s through a promotion early next year.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

That's not supposed to happen, right? :o

I know I should get with the technology, but dammit, I can't quit my discman.

It's not supposed to happen, but it does sometimes...it's really quite an anchor around mp3s. Well, when I first started collecting mp3s in 2000 they were all DRM-free, and most of my collection still is....but sometimes if I buy something from the uber-restrictive iTunes, you can run into problems.

And get with the mp3 times already Opt!!! You'll wonder why you didn't switch earlier.

Advantages of digital mp3 players:

Much smaller.
No moving parts = no skipping.
Longer battery life.
That battery is usually internal, by the way.
Holds many more songs.
Usually compatible with more music formats.
Usually comes with a great many more features.
Cheap.

Tell me, Daniel... in a discussion about digital music storage, what triggered your mind to think of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory?

The list of mp3 players FAR outweighs that of disc players. However, one thing disc players have is the ability to switch out content (put in a new disc), but considering the number of songs an mp3 player can hold...you can put your whole CD collection on it already, so the point is moot. Is 89th still talking?

What is it with you two? I asked a simple question. If he doesn't have an answer, that's one thing. But both of you are acting like little children.

Exactly. I suppose you can do the same thing with flash memory -- my first mp3 player used flash memory -- but I see it as a shortcoming more than a benefit. Switching disks/cards/etc takes time, and it means you need to carry those items with you as well. More internal storage is the way to go.

Just a different opinion... the long-term solution is in building a flash[-like] memory interface that can address an insanely large memory space (say, using 64-bit addressing scheme). Then you can progressively upgrade with memory media with bigger and bigger capacity without having to change your portable music player device.

That's the way digital camera industry evolved, actually. First Sony came out with a "Memory Stick" standard that tops out at 512 MB or something, then the SD people came out with a standard that could go up to 2 GB or something, then each successively standardized standards that can accommodate higher capacity devices (and now we see flash devices going up to 16 GB in terms of product, I think).

Get to a 64-bit addressing interface standard and you bump the limit to 32 Terabytes. Once there in terms of standards, you just wait for Moore's Law to catch up in terms of products. :)

I'm curious, too. In fact, I was scratching my head before I even got to Larry's question.

Does that make me a sociopath, too?

Another advantage to the MP3 player, is that they also have players that can be used underwater. :D (I don't have one. Yet.) :float:

It was probably a combination of my avatar and the soundtrack that would accompany my avatar. And yes that makes you a sociopath. :D
