Stupid book.

I'm afraid of boats. It's a full blown phobia. Can't get on one. Even the discussion of me possibly getting on a boat causes me to panic.

But I've always been ok with flying.

Then I read this stupid Flight 116 is Down book. A book written for TEENS. I fly out on Saturday - and for the first time ever, I'm nervous about flying.

I hate having an overactive imagination.

Can we help psychoanalyze you, Dol? I'm sure with our collective wisdom the board could get you on a dinner cruise in a fortnight!

I'm reading the Almost Moon by Alice Sebold. It's her latest about a woman who kills her mother because her mom is mentally ill. The mom has full blown dementia and the daughter suffered most of her life because of her mother's mental illness.

I don't know why I'm reading it. It's not pleasant. But just like reading some threads we've had in the past, it's like stopping to watch a train wreck.

why do we do it?

Oh, I know, justme! My absolutely favourite genre is dystopian. I absolutely love reading books about the future gone horribly wrong. Of course, I have fairly regular nightmares about actually LIVING in one of those futures. But wouldn't you know, I go back to those books again and again!

Dol,

I used to read anything and everything about the Holocaust. Mark thought I was nuts. Well I was.

Anyhow, one night I had a nightmare of killing my own baby. I was lined up with about 20 other women. We were all holding our babies. Mine was about 2 yo. The Nazis were systematically killing the babies by shooting them in the head. Well by the time the Nazis got to me, I turned around and slammed my baby's head on the pavement. Killing him instantly. The Nazis shot me. I remember dying.

since then, I never read anything about the Holocaust.

Those are the kinds of dreams I have, justme - horrific things.

And just for the record, it's not like I'm going to start screaming when the plane takes off or anything. I've just never been nervous before a flight before. Not even a little. And now I have this silly book in my head and there's my over-active imagination doing the "what ifs".

it's GOOD to wake up p!ssed at the friggin' Nazi's, justme!

I'm sorry about your dream though, it's funny how disconcerting bad dreams can be. I had one particularly creepy dream about my mother dying when I was pretty young, maybe 9 or 10...and it still makes me uncomfortable to think about it.

Dol...I know about books and getting weirded out. I used to read all the scary stuff I could get my hands on, never bothered me at all. Just after I brought Will home from the hospital, I started reading Stephen King's "It"...got about four chapters in, shut the book, thought, "I am a mother now, I can't be scaring myself with this stuff," and that was the last time I read anything scary.

Your flight will be fine. Have a drink. It will be REALLY fine (hic)

I'm with Deb.

When I started travelling w/ my boys, when they were babies, I would carefully pack a diaper bag. Inside the bag was diapers, snacks, books, toys, etc. In an outside pocket would be cash for a glass of wine.

I can't recommend that highly enough.

Dol,

I know phobias about boats, flying, bridges, etc...all exist. But personally I'm a bit perplexed how the irrational fear can be so significant as to cause someone to not partake in the activity? For example, I get weak knees when I'm on the edge of a cliff, and my heart rate goes up a bit when I'm landing in a plane, and I sometimes imagine when I'm on a boat that there is a huge whale underneath the boat...but ultimately if take a step back and look at the situation rationally...I find there's nothing really to be afraid of. Hope things get better for you...after all, what if Liam wants to go fishing? :P

I can't explain it either, 89th. But the boat thing is very real for me. Yes, rationally, I know that there's nothing to be afraid of. I physically can't make myself get on one. I can't even define exactly what specifically scares me. I know how to swim. I used to go on boats all the time when I was a diver. But I couldn't get on now.

And Liam does go fishing. With grandpa. :)

If it was important to you or for your job, you could probably conquer that fear. Unless you're applying for the Coast Guard or hoping to become a cruise ship entertainment director, getting on a boat is probably avoidable. I have a close friend who had a disabling fear of flying, but whose job made it absolutely necessary for him to fly, and fly frequently. He had no choice but to get right over it, which he did with the help of a therapist who specializes in that sort of treatment. That was about 15-20 years ago, I think, and he still flies fine now, even after Sept 11...I thought that might set him back, but he is okay.

I used to be terrified of the water. Any water that was too deep for me to touch bottom, and I would completely FREAK.

When I was 12, I learned to water ski. (Bobbing around in ski vest, of course.) After that, I was a fish. Nothing could keep me out of the water... I was a lifeguard while in the Army. A few years ago, I went snorkeling in Bermuda. When I got back, I took scuba lessons. :)

:thumb: Yes indeed, getting over phobias is a good thing. To me it's a perfect example of getting something positive out of adversity. Down with comfort zones!

Well, I'm not sure what the lesson is... Maybe it's conquering fear through the love of something greater than that fear? I guess if I were afraid of boats, and after watching a friend sailboating, and seeing how relaxing and peaceful it was, I would be tempted to go out on a sailboat, and thus, conquer that fear. Maybe? I don't know...

Well, having proper motivation can certainly help, but the desire to break free of the restraint fear can have on your life can be motivation enough, sometimes. I guess the lesson, IMO, is that conquering fear* is always a good thing, and is inherently valuable.

*I don't like that phrase, though. You can deal with fear but I don't think you ever really "conquer" it. The fear still presents itself, but if dealt with properly it does not control your actions.

I think you're right, AL...except for the fears that are truy irrational, like Adrian Monk's fear of milk...most of the time we learn to manage our fears if we prefer not to have our lives and experiences curtailed by them.

My one phobia is spiders, but it's not that bad. I don't like them, but I hate killing them. I usually just put them under a cup and take them outside or I just leave them alone.
And how are you today?
