Canada Legalizises same-sex marriage

89th suggested I start a new thread

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Same-sex_marriage_in_Canada

I think we should do the same here in the US. I know 2 women who adopted 2 children. The kids are now 10 and 12 yrs old and are happy and well adjusted. I have known these women since I was a kid. They used to rent a house from my parents, and we all became good friends. Now they are part of our Christmas and Thanksgiving, as well as frequent visitors to my family's home in Vermont, in fact we all think of them as family. I have pictures of them on my refrigerator smiling and happy. When I hear arguments against same sex-marriage I think of their picture and it strengthens my resolve. My child will know these women and their kids as family.

I wonder if people who are against same-sex marriages even know anyone who is a same-sex couple. If they did, maybe it would not be such an issue. I was introduced to this concept as a child, my parents never spoke in a negative way about the situation, ever. Perhaps this is why I am unprepared to accept what they do as wrong.

I was so horrified by the risk that this would undermine my otherwise perfectly happy marriage that I was compelled to leave the country and come to live in the USA.

No argument from me. There is an ever-growing population of same sex couples here in B.C., a whole lot of transplanted Americans in that group.

Nothing bad has happened.

Nothing bad has happened.

Other than the influx of Americans, presumably.

FR if we accept homosexual marriage it will lead to heterosexual marriages breaking down.

For every homosexual that marries a heterosexual marriage is destroyed. It's terrible. There's a conservation principle at work here you see - the marriages have to come from somewhere don't they? And where are these homosexual marriages going to come from? Yep that's right stolen right out of the heterosexual community.

That is why we heterosexuals must stand firm against this tyranny.

That's what I think. People are afraid of the unknown, or something they do not understand.

Hurto-sexual sounds kind of fun. Most marriages have plenty of the former, not a whole lot of the latter.

Not mine, obviously.

 Suprisingly, no. Seems like we're getting the good Americans. ^_^
I've met some really great people lately who've moved here; they're here because they are thrilled to live in a place where they are accepted, and seem to want to join in, and give back to the community.

FR,

I'll try to keep my comments as brief as possible.

Let me preface this by saying that I think given the social trend, gay marriage will be a norm in the future.

That said, I think a monogamous heterosexual marriage is not only a basic building block of society, but also holds a unique position when it comes to sexual relationships and the (biological) procreation and rearing of healthy, balanced, and stable children. Therefore I think the government should give special recognition and legal rights to such a relationship.

However, I do know (and dont need to debate) that other types of couples could raise children and be just as stable, etc, etc, etc...

Regarding other relationships that dont fit within that framework, I think there should be a certain legal path for those couples that also want to proclaim legally their declared devotion as a couple and their pledge to society and themselves to be a stable and healthy relationship, etc... Such couples would include both gay, bigamous, polygamous (polyamory, polyandry), plutonic relationships, even incestuous relationships...and basically any number of any gender of people who want to form a societal unit where legal rights could be transferred and held.

Regarding adoption, it's honestly whatever is in the best interest of the child. I know I personally think infertile heterosexual couples should be given priority but that other couples (as listed above) should be tested (along with hetero couples) in the application process and if such an adoption is going to provide a better environment for the child, that much the better.

Regarding the religious aspect, while many of my social views have been formed by religion, experience, life lessons, parental advice, etc....I am not basing my views on same-sex marriage in the legal aspect based on any biblical foundation, just as I dont hold my abortion or death penalty positions based on the bible - rather what I think is best for society.

There - I think that was as short as I could make it...hope that helps clarify my stance on the issue.

89, I'm not sure about it being a Norm in your future, but I'm positive that couples will be Frank and Earnest.

I do not think that the vital elements for rearing healthy, balanced, and stable children exist only between a man and a woman.

Love, guidance, discipline, role models, all can be part of a same-sex or single parent scenario.

I think preference for adoption should come from the couples ability to provide not just basic necessities but the love and support as well...regardless of their orientation.

BTW Thanks for a well written reply.

FR,

I agree that those elements do not *only* exist in a male/female relationship, but in my opinion not only is it the ideal but also biologically how we are set up as a species. This of course will end up just begin a disagreement between us, as you probably already know!

Also, I agree about the adoption piece, but I believe heterosexual couples should be given priority if there is a dispute between two couples. Just my opinion, again.

Anyway - gotta run, talk to you soon.
