Benazir Bhutto is dead

HOLY CARP!!!
I just got an email (it's a prayer request) from a missionary friend regarding a pastor in Lahore. It's pretty bad there:

Quote:

I just spoke with Pastor Azam who lives in Lahore. That was 10:00 p.m. eastern in the U.S. and 8:00 a.m. in Pakistan. Azam was in church with his people when he heard the commotion outside. The people of the Pakistan Peoples Party (Bhutto) are fighting people of the Pakistan Muslim League (Musharaff). Many are blaming Musharaff for her death rather than Al Quaeda or other terrorist organizations (though no investigation has yet taken place) Azam and his congregation locked themselves in the church when the disturbance started. They eventually all got to their homes and Azam told them all to stay inside today.

I never imagined that the fighting would spill over into his neighborhood. Generally those protests stay in downtown areas or around government buildings. Evidently in Lahore it is party member against party member wherever they are. There is much unrest there and they are in danger.

p.s. Khalid Naz said at this time there was no trouble in his city Faisalabad.

I'm waiting to hear from someone else who might have some first hand information. Moonbat...anything more from your girlfriend?

CNN.com is saying there is a report that al Quaeda has claimed responsibility for Bhutto's assasination.

From what I heard on ABC last night (although they called Bhutto a "political leader", which I thought was disingenuous) led me to cut Mushie some slack. Bhutto was leaving the scene of her speech and was riding in an armored vehicle. She stood up, as politicians are known to do, to glad hand the crowd or wave or something and the assassin took the opportunity and was successful. Not sure how any security can deal with that. I was also thinking that the bomb strapped on the guy was probably as much for suicide as for creating further death and destruction - if they guy didn't blow himself up he'd probably have suffered a much more painful end as the crowd tore him apart.

Now they're saying that it wasn't the bullets or the bomb that got her.

She bumped her head on the sun roof when she ducked and that killed her.

There were no bullet or shrapnel wounds.

Weird.

Sounds like we need CSI-Karachi.

If it turns out that someone in her security detail offed her inside the armored vehicle, then that country will explode and Mushie will fall.

She would have had to hit her head pretty hard to fracture her skull. I've wacked my head getting in or out of cars, (especially when drunk: "OUCH! *hic*) but nothing more than a bump on the noggin.

i heard on the radio that there is a plan easily set in motion, that if musharraf's government falls, and pakistan's nuclear aresenal could possibly be in danger of falling into the hands of a beligerent regime, the us military would go in and secure all the weapons.

i imagine thats true.

Moon, curious to know what she is doing over there - studying? Is she from there? Etc.?

FWIW, I find this whole thing incredibly, incredibly sad. Every time I see pictures of her or people mourning her I just feel like crying. Aside from the obvious concern - that it's going wreak havoc in the region - it represents such a dashing of hope for the country. This woman rising above such immense obstacles who could had such great potential to usher in a moderate democracy and so very importantly, a huge move toward equality for women in an area that continues to treat women as chattel. Unfortunatley, she seemed to be "it." She was carrying on her murdered father's legacy and there seems to be no one in line to carry on in her absence. I feel so immensely sorry for the people of Pakistan.

Ms Bhutto was killed on Thursday after an election rally in the city of Rawalpindi. The gunman opened fire before an explosive was detonated.

Security officials initially said Ms Bhutto had been shot in the neck and head. But the government then announced she died when the force of the blast smashed her head on a sunroof lever.

Dismissing the government’s “ludicrous” theory, a close aide who prepared Ms Bhutto’s body for burial insisted she was shot in the head.

Sherry Rehman said: “She has a bullet wound at the back of her head on the left side. It came out the other. That was a very large wound, and she bled profusely through that.”

She accused the government of not providing enough security for Ms Bhutto and attempting a “cover up”. …

I'm actually getting kind of concerned about one guy I haven't been able to reach. That's probably silly and egocentric, he's got more things to worry about than filling me in. All the same, it will be nice to know that things are settling down

More video showing that the government is lying about the cause of death. You can see the gunman and the suicide bomber.

My God - he was right in her lap almost.

But I would dispute that it is difficult to hit one's head hard enough to be killed, having lost a friend just that way from only a fall down a short flight of stairs. A bomb blast could certainly provide the needed force.

I'm not certain why the distinction is all that important. She wouldn't have hit her head but for the bom blast / gun shot, right?

I've read analysis that this might lessen the blame on Musharraf--taking heat for not giving her enough security--but I don't see where the cause of death lessens or increases the culpability.

Maybe because it made her look culpable - i.e., if she hadn't been standing up in her car, she would have been fine.

I just read in the paper today that her 19 year old son (currently studying at Oxford and having hardly spent any time in Pakistan) is being charged with heading up the party. I can't imagine how that's gonna fly.

The analysis I've read suggests that, if she was killed directly, she is more likely to be viewed as a martyr ... if she died from hitting her head, less likely.

Analysis: Military slew Bhutto -- sources

WASHINGTON, Dec. 31 (UPI) -- Benazir Bhutto was assassinated on orders of lower- and middle-level officers of the Pakistani army and air force, according to various intelligence sources, including members of India's counterintelligence service.

According to a source who asked to remain unnamed, members of the Pakistani armed forces involved in Thursday's killing of the former prime minister and leader of the opposition are sympathizers of the ultra-conservative Islamists with ties to the jihadis.

"It's worrying when half of your lower or mid-level Pak intelligence analysts have bin Laden screen savers on their computers," a former official of the CIA was reported to have commented.

More than one analyst is of the opinion al-Qaida and other jihadis have managed to successfully penetrate Pakistan's armed forces and security services. Given the fact Pakistan is in possession of nuclear weapons, the possibility of a pro-al-Qaida regime replacing President Pervez Musharraf would radically change the entire geopolitical alignment in southwest Asia, and it would have a spin-off effect on the Middle East, as well, primarily in regards to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

And it's not for lack of trying, either. Pro-Islamist groups have tried to assassinate Musharraf multiple times. Two attempts took place in December 2003 when rockets were fired at his vehicle during a visit to Rawalpindi, the same city where Bhutto was assassinated last Thursday.

Yup - and here are we are in Iraq, with our troops spread precariously thin, frantically putting out wild fires of our own making, having squandered our resources for the past four years while the real al qaeda threat has been gathering steam the whole time in Pakistan. Since before the invasions of Iraq, when all the chicken little hawks have cried "WMDs in Iraq!!" I've raised the issue of the known nuclear arsenal in Pakistan. No one supporting the invasion, however, seemed very concerned about this - let alone, the fact that bin Laden was at large there and our efforts in Afghanistan seemed to falling to the wayside as the Taliban regained a stronghold. What a horrible mess.

So, you would support an invasion of Pakistan? After all, you just stated that Al Quaeda is all over the place there, and EVERYONE knows they have WMDs.
