Well, one thing the nation is not very divided on is our non-approval of Bush and even more so, Congress! Anyway, U R in luck! There will be a change in leadership, no matter what happens. |

Unless of course there is a huge outrage of some sort involving rhubarb or some such and Bush is compelled, against his own wishes, to declare martial law, and eventually start wearing very silly hats with enormous feathers in them and huge quantities of medals, and starts calling himself 'El Presidente' and Dick Cheney's accent slips back into it's native heavily accented German and he starts saluting like Doctor Strangelove and, and,... I know, I know, not that likely - but you never know.....stranger things have happened in Guatemala. Or maybe I've had too much X-mas spirit. |

I still don't get what that is supposed to mean. How is the country SO divided? The recent national elections were very close between left and right. I'd say that political beliefs run generally along a symmetrical bell curve with sentiment spread relatively evenly around the center. Things are actually fairly well balanced at the moment and have been for a while. |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

Like I said... To bring people together is a sign of a good leader. To drive people apart is the sign of a poor leader. Our current leader drives people apart....therefore he is a poor leader. 3 part sylogisms. My logic is fairly simple. |

Isn't Bush's presidency merely a continuation of the polarization that started under Clinton? |

Maybe. It was a very close election....one of the closest in US history I say his presidency was an exacerbation of the polarization that started under Clinton. "Exacerbation of the polarization" I love it. |

How does he drive people apart? When he started dems and reps were pretty closely divided half and half. Isn't that as apart as they can get? Any movement either way would certainly count as bringing together. And there has been movement. A lot of people who liked him in the beginning now go the other way. In fact as an anti-Bush person you must have noticed the movement has all been your way. |

Godammit! I want to disagree with you so badly! But you are right. Were divided before he took office. But.....he should have brought us together! Dammit! Why don't you just agree with me? |

If you really want to, you still have room to argue. A people "already apart" can still grow "further apart." If you can argue that the US citizenry is even more polarized (e.g., the pro-war is even more zealously pro-war while the anti-war is even more zealously anti-war), you can still show that the country is more divided now that it was 4 or 8 years ago.

Won't get fooled again? Based on the fact that people are willing to actually vote for Mitt Romney and Hillary Clinton, I doubt it. |

There is ONE, and only ONE, thing for which i will give W a lot of credit this year, and that is putting David Patreaus in charge in Iraq. That has made a huge difference in the military aspect of this war, and given us a chance to allow the political aspect to follow. The democratically elected government we forced into place is floundering and has little support nationally, in fact, our recent successes are due in large part to our supporting Sunni militias who seek to undermine the authority of the Shia police we have enabled. Nevertheless, I think Patreaus is a genius and would not be surprised to see him challenging President As to the Iraq invasion, i still give it a 50% chance of a positive result and a 1% chance of being a good idea with the benefit of hindsight. jf |
