Bach, I'm sorry... Being on call is one thing I REALLY don't miss about being in the medical field!!

George, I hope your day is quiet. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you, pal.

Rosemary, that sounds like a lovely gift. How thoughtful! :)

Moonbat - can you get Crysis to run OK? It's on my list of things I've got to have or I'm just going to die, but I need more video card power first.

It runs fine on my rig but i have an 8800 gtx and a q6600, i can run it mostly with settings set to high with some very high and some medium mixed in. If i try it all on very high my frame rate dies horribly.

On all medium it's still amazingly beautiful.

You can download the demo for free, (which is basically the beginning of the game) to check how well your machine can handle it. I would imagine that anything less than a 7800 or x1900xt will probably struggle as it's notoriously demanding in terms of graphical hardware.

I have an 8800 GTS. I have been leery about trying Crysis, hearing what a resource hog it is, but I may just have to try it.

I have an 8800 GT 512Mb but haven't tried Crysis yet. Extreme Planet and Unreal Tournament III work great though. Oh and IL-2, but I haven't gotten into that one......yet.

You would probably be more stimulated by the Huron...if your music theory is as good as I expect it is, you'll enjoy the more technical aspects of the science that he presents. I loved them both, but I usually don't recommend the Huron for musical laymen; the Levitin book is much more accessible for non-musicians.

I got a KitchenAid Artisan stand mixer in cobalt blue, plus pasta making attachments (mmm, fresh pasta!), two bottles of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, flannel pjs & and a robe, crepe pan (my old one was worn out), and a crepe cook book.

IT and I got a dominoes game, Belagio sipping chocolates, foods and sweets including Harry & David and a gigantic basket filled with imported foods from Italy, a book called "You Staying Young" that my sibs got as well, and Santa gave us a biometric safe.

IT got some nice things which I'm sure he'll tell you about himself.

Most importantly we spent the day with our moms. And everyone kicked my butt at dominoes! At pogo.com, I nearly always beat the computer at dominoes -- but in real life, IT and the moms got me every time.

My family made the experiment of not exchanging any presents at christmas this year.

I think we'll repeat this experiment next year. It is incredibly difficult to make meaningful presents in a time where everyone has everything already.

My mom and I discussed this exact point. Small gifts -- box of chocolate sort of thing -- I am taking her shopping and to lunch. Better to spend time with family than stress out looking for gifts.

Abso-frickin'-lutely. I have no voting rights in the family legislature, but if I did I'd move to strike all gift-giving. If I can't have that I'd settle for mandatory lists!

The thing is, we don't know each other nearly as much as we'd like to think we do. Sure there's a couple of "safe" presents you can rely on, but those things are small, like you said. Nobody has a clue about the stuff people really want, because we see each other for about a week each year. Makes gift buying a very stressful responsibility.
I cite irreconcilable differences.

I got a TUMI wallet -- very cool; an artist's easel with a bunch of new oils and brushes; a sport radio and headphones for the gym; a bunch of uncirculated Adams gold dollars; and some great handmade sugarfree chocolates. :)

It was a very nice Christmas -- after Mass we had a brunch with our mothers, (then I took a nap), for dinner I rotisseried a prime rib, and we played dominoes, Sorry, and Apples to Apples.

The whole thing about Christmas gifts is really for kids, IMO. Nothing like watching the excitement in a child's eyes as they open presents.

Adults have basically everything they need, and if they need something or want something, they just buy it.

I have a friend who basically has everything he needs (he's worth in the $100s Millions), so what do you get the guy who has everything? His daughters got him two baby ostriches for his ranch. :P

I ate ostrich in St. Martin a couple of years ago. I was expecting it to taste like chicken ( ), but it reminded me more of beef. Quite good actually.

My oldest daughter gave me a Sirius radio. But to tell the truth, I'm too damn cheap to pay the 13 bucks a month to subscribe to the service. I'm just not into radio that much. So I don't know what I'm going to do with it right now.

Aqua you already know this but others on the forum might not.

My family doesn't celebrate Christmas. My parents (non-denominational Christians) decided to not celebrate the holiday in the early 80's and since then I have just grown up that way. I think it's because of the controversial/pagan nature of the origin of the holiday and also the current materialistic status of it...but either way I've always grown up by having a family reunion around the Christmas time and we also give presents on Thanksgiving...which is actually a pretty low stress time to shop and it also kinda makes quite a bit of sense to give gifts on Thanksgiving instead. Anyway, that's my story.

When I'm older and have my own family, I will probably celebrate Christmas. I'll make sure it's a very Christ-centered holiday (holy day) and if we give presents I'll maybe have the tradition of giving only one present to each person to cut back on the material focus that the holiday has now become.

I got some nice clothes, shirts, etc. I always really appreciate it, as I have no taste in what looks good, and I hate going shopping to look for clothes for me. My son got me season one of both "Barney Miller" and "WKRP in Cincinnati." I will enjoy watching these old shows!
