Sam, You once posted about your family having a tradition of sort about going out for Chinese around Christmas time. Assuming this year is no exception, which Chinese restaurant did you go to, what dishes did you get, how's the food, and what fortune did you get from the cookie? ![]() For every one else who celebrate Christmas -- Merry Christmas.

Only a Kosher (approved by the Beit Din Tzedek of the Eida Hachareidis of Jerusalem) Chinese restaurant would meet the gourmet requirements of Sam's family !!! |

I went to pick up the take-out order tonight. They said it would be an hour over the phone -- I got there and waited 45 extra minutes! (The girl at the front counter said she's 12 years old. I'm guessing she's probably the daughter of a manager, or something like that. "Hey family, we're going to work tonight! Gotta serve the Jews!") While we were there, the place was packed, and there were other people waiting. One of the women who was waiting to be seated read out loud the waiting list, laughing: "Ornstein", "Greenberg", "Goldman".......... "All Jews!," observed another woman who was also waiting. "We've got a minyan" remarked another. And then, just like that, 6 or 8 of us perfect strangers who were waiting for Chinese food on Christmas got caught up in a big conversation, Yiddish words flying around. It was awesome. ![]() So, we got lots of appetizers this time. Vegetarian spring rolls, 16 fried chicken wings, 8 balamaki sticks, 6 steamed chicken dumplings. My brother had crispy duck and wonton soup, but the appetizers alone was enough for the rest of us! (Usually, we wouldn't get the wings or the balamaki, and instead get a lamb dish and a beef dish and a chicken dish, but we ate *so much* popcorn this afternoon playing the Jewish Edition of "Apples to Apples"... on Christmas........) We ate by the big T.V., while watching a movie none of us had ever seen: "Life" (Eddie Murphy, Martin Lawrence). And my fortune: "Cooperate with those who have both know how and integrity."

Sam, that honestly sounds like it was a lot of fun! ![]() Last time I went out for Chinese food, I told the chef that the chicken was rubbery. He replied, "Ah sank you velly much!!"

Thanks for sharing! Reads like you've had a great Christmas! ![]() (Me, just plain old family gathering with the grand-parent generation doing most of the cooking, the parent generation doing most of the set-up/clean-up, and the grand-children generation opening presents and playing with new toys. )

I Owe It All To John D'Oh

One of the great movie lines of all time, from My Favorite Year: "Jews know two things: how to suffer, and where to find great Chinese food." ![]() Incidentally, I went to a Christmas party a couple of weeks ago ... at a kosher Chinese restaurant. The place even has little stars of David in the iron handrails. |

My wife and I had her great niece and parents here for Christmas so we had Chinese. I doubt it was Kosher. |

The surest indicator of a great Chinese restaurant is that the clientèle is mostly Chinese and Jewish. |
