MS and I watched it last night -- a very well crafted movie and it deserved all the awards it got -- including the Oscar for best foreign. ! I think Mark would enjoy it. And anyone with a socialist/collectivist bent should particularly watch it. |

HOLY CARP!!!

The film was a huge success in Germany, of course - it very rarely happens that a German movie also has at least moderate success in the US. I liked the movie a lot, and it helped us West Germans to understand the atmosphere in the DDR before 1989. The ending of the movie is really moving. In my opinion it was one of the best German movies since "Das Boot" in the 1980s. For a more humorous perspective on the DDR, I can highly recommend the 2003 movie "Good Bye Lenin!". |

havent seen the movie. when i was in berlin, we did a tour of a stasi prison in east berlin, tour was given by former inmate, a journalist, who was arrested for writing a piece on punk rock bands in berlin, and the charge was bad mouthing communist german culture. the germany trip was part of a bach pilgrimage to the thuringia region, after seeing berlin, to see all the bach sites, and that was also in the previous east germany. goddamn russian communism ruined so many lives. what a stupidity. |
