100 people arrested for not having toilets in their homes. Wed Dec 19, 9:40 AM ET Local authorities have arrested at least 100 Ugandans for failing to build toilets in their homes in the midst of a cholera epidemic that has killed 8 people and infected 164, state media reported Wednesday. "We cannot watch as people die (of cholera)," northwestern Bulisa district administrator Norbert Turyahikayo told the New Vision daily, justifying the arrest of Ugandans found to have huts with no pit latrines Tuesday. Police spokesman Hassan Kasinje told Reuters the building of homes without proper toilets was forbidden in Uganda, though he did not know of the arrests. "It is illegal ... but it is not an arrestable offence. Whoever arrested them is wrong," he said. "A health officer is supposed to instruct them to build or they can be cautioned." In September, 70 Ugandans in the east were seized for the same offence. Many in remote villages lack latrines. Cholera epidemics spread by poor sanitation are common. |

Of course, where are they going to poop and pee, if they don't have toilets? Especially if there's cholera going around? It seems silly because we all have indoor plumbing, and we have come to expect it. It's very important, and not everyone elsewhere in the world has such basic sanitary devices. |

Any locale that defines a proper toilet as a pit latrine should not be surprised at a high incidence of cholera. |

Not entirely better, but getting there. I did switch to liquid Tylenol for my daytime painkiller and am still on Lortab for my night time painkiller. Round the clock Lortab gave me an unpleasant side effect (which the surgeon failed to mention :veryangry:) which required six hours in the ER -- but I'm better now. Tonight we're having a turkey dinner at my brother's and tomorrow we're having a roast beef & Yorkshire pudding dinner here. I'll be drinking Ensure.

When I had my septum worked on a few years ago, the doctor told me I wasn't allowed to sneeze for 2 weeks. He told me some techniques to prevent an on-coming sneeze, which actually came in handy years later when I almost sneezed several times on restaurant kitchen tables! ![]() (I asked a couple managers in different places I worked what they would do if I sneezed on the food. One said he'd throw away EVERYTHING, even if it was at the bottom of a pile on the other end of the table. The other said she'd just throw away the top couple layers in the area where I sneezed, and leave everything else.) |
