I have to say, I like being in a country where people at stores say that with no hesitations.
And how are you today?

Me, too. Actually practically everyone I've had dealings with this Christmas has said it. And, unlike, in the past, mostly everyone has been very pleasant.

But I guess you're talking of Britain :P

I am. When I left the states, people were still saying Happy Holidays, and only half-heartedly.

Well, the U.S. is pretty diverse; I wouldn't shrug off the whole country yet.

I had the same experience before I went home, but now that I'm here, it's "Merry Christmas" everywhere you go. The cop who pulled me over two nights ago even said it, and gave me a warning instead of a reckless driving ticket for going too fast.

It entirely depends on where you are.

I hate the smarmy, "Happy Holidays," and "Seasons Greetings."

If someone wished me a Happy Hanukkah, I wouldn't storm out of their business. I would thank them, and wish them a Happy Hanukkah in return. If someone wishes me a Merry Christmas, then I thank them and wish them a Merry Christmas in return. Ramadan, Saturnalia, Solstice... Whatever...

There is a real paucity of graciousness in our modern society... People are all too worried about WORDS, and completely miss the spirit of giving, of compassion, of reconciliation, brotherhood, and peace, that are the spirit behind this season.

*sigh*

Stop the world. I want to get off. :(

I don't think it's too little graciousness, Frank.

I think it's that people are too quick to take offense.

Well, if people were more gracious, they wouldn't be so quick to take offense, would they?

I'm so offended... :lol2:

But I pretty much can when it comes to how people greet each other at stores, etc.

Especially if you're shopping in malls or at major retailers.

I pretty much stay away from them.

Sheesh... Really... There were plenty of things about Japan that I didn't like, but if I had to live there again, I'd be okay with it. There are plenty of things that I don't like about the United States, too. It's only as big of a deal as I make of it.

Um... I hate to mention it but we're getting huffy and contentious here over exactly how someone wishes you well.

Perhaps if we have time to consider these things that deeply we're all pretty blessed and ought to appreciate it.

There are Americans who don't celebrate Halloween, one reason being that it's a pagan holiday celebrating ghosts, witches, goblins, and all sorts of other supernatural evils (even though it's been americanized so that ghosts are smiling, violent pranks are unacceptable and rare, etc).

But that doesn't mean everyone should be silent about Halloween. It's a holiday that most Americans celebrate, just as Christmas is a holiday that most Americans celebrate.

Of course, if I knew that the very person I was talking with doesn't celebrate Halloween, then there's no reason I'd wish him a "Happy Halloween." On the other hand, can we really blame the stores?

Well, I refuse to believe that the English are imbued with Courtesy Magic, or that their store employees go through some kind of Merry Christmas training that leads to more well-wishing than in the U.S. People are people; decent fellows and jerkstores alike work in stores all across the world.

Sorry, I'm not good at the whole "tidings of comfort and joy" thing yet. Just need some practice.

I wouldn't like it. Not everyone is a Christian and as a Christian I think that Christians complain too much. It's so hard to be a member of a religion that only 75% of my fellow citizens are a member of too! Everyone has to say Christmas to me! My children can't pray in school and I pay taxes! I want a baby Jesus on the courthouse lawn! Woe is me! :weeping:

I actually prefer to not go through the holiday greetings when I'm making a purchase. Their job is to get me speedily through the line. As long as they are decent with me, I'm content.

I think the "Happy Holidays" greetings can get out of hand, and I have no need for empty well-wishing.

EDIT- Gosh, re-reading this I sound like a grinch. :P

Let me clarify that I enjoy a heartfelt "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Holidays" as much as the next person. I just don't expect it, and would prefer nothing over a forced greeting.

It's not that they're bestowed with anything special at all, it's just that their country allows it, and ours doesn't (the whole Christmas thing, that is). There IS a difference in the way people are greeted. I was just saying that I enjoy it, because I feel it is more heartfelt.

My dad and I were doing some last minute food shopping today, and the cashier wished us a merry christmas, not happy holidays. The store also had "Happy Christmas" banners throughout the store.

I just appreciate being in a country that isn't so Gung-ho about political correctness.

Now, as to the fighting and getting up tight, I don't think I am at all. I understand what Aqua said, but I disagree because I think there is a difference. Is that uptight?

I haven't been wished 'Merry Christmas' by anybody in shops in Massachusetts. Not a single one. That could be something to do with my facial expression while shopping, of course.

I actually got quite annoyed at how many times I've been told "Merry Christmas" since I've been home. That's just me, a lot of people here say they like that kind of stuff, but the point is that there's no Merry Christmas shortage here in the U.S.; you just aren't going to the right areas.

Where does it say that we're not "allowed" to say that here in the U.S.?

Scrooge!

It's not that we're not allowed - I guess I should have been more clear - it's that it seems England isn't as insane about PC crap. I have heard a few "Happy Holidays" since I've been here, but I've heard far more "happy/merry christmas". In the US, it's the other way around, especially in stores.

I just get tired of PC sh!t, I guess, and being over here is a nice break from it.
