HOLY CARP!!!
|
Today I'll move to Denmark. Yesterday the moval company fetched all my stuff. The moval guys hated me for my 6' Grotrian grand, since I live on the 4th floor, and there is only a very narrow stairway. But everything went well. From tomorrow I'll live in a nice house near the beach ![]() Two days ago I was informed by the European Research Commission that my funding proposal for a quite big project (about 1.5 Mio Euros) was accepted. It is a new form of research funding in Europe, where the investigator can basically do with the money whatever he wants (except putting it in his own private pocket). What a good start for my new job in Denmark We'll get a dog, most likely a Labrador retriever. I've been dreaming of having a dog again since my childhood, when my previous dog died. Finally I'm going to have enough space again to keep one. The most exciting thing is of course that I am going to become a father in March. All my and my wife's relatives are looking forward to it - it is the first grandchild for both my and my wife's parents. And we are looking forward, too, of course  Life is good!

I wonder, though, whether I have finally become the kind of Babbitt (or "square"? I hope this is the right word) that I always hated as an adolescent. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

If you want trouble, find yourself a redhead
|
First, many, many congratulations, Klaus. I am sure you have worked very hard - and smart - to be where you are in your life. It should be exciting to reap the rewards thereof. Don't worry too much about becoming Babbitized. It's not so bad, quite painless actually. You are about to embark on the amazing journey of parenthood, and that matures most everyone. You'll have in your life something far more important to you than yourself, and that changes everything. Your 'squareness' will make so much sense to you because you will see the world through very different eyes. |

Congratulations, Klaus! ![]() Great news! Would you mind saying a little more about your research project? What do you hope to study/prove/discover/accomplish? (Are you sure you want to adjust a new place, a new baby, and a new dog all at the same time? The dog can probably wait a bit longer, no?) |

Another voice of congratulations. It all sounds like a thrilling time to be Klaus. So much going on, and everything seeming falling into place for you. Wonderful, simply wonderful. Oh, and with regard to the other comment - you do turn into your parents. Sorry 'bout that. |

Thanks for all the kind words from all of you! I am now in a hotel in my new home town. Tomorrow morning we'll get the keys. Ax and IT asked about the grant. It is from the new ERC (a kind of European NSF), and it is a program whose main purpose is to prevent the best researchers to go to the US and stay in Europe instead (this is of course not the official purpose ). In my case it is a project about better programming languages, in particular languages that can be morphed into domain-specific languages. The nice part about these grants is that they are pure research grants - no deadlines, no deliverables, no "industrial applications" and all this other annoying stuff that is usually associated to many other grants  That's why these kinds of grants are extremely competitive. Here is the press release about the grants. bach - thanks for the link! My Danish is still *very* basic, but it is already sufficient to order beer in a pub. R2 - no, you didn't miss something. She was indeed "only" my girlfriend until 8 weeks ago. I just didn't say anything about my "secret" marriage on TNCR yet :ph43r: But it was not such a big deal after being together for 14 years already  FrankW - yes, it is an international move, but it is only about 600 miles from my old place, so it is probably not comparable to your adventures in the Middle East and elsewhere. |
