I Owe It All To John D'Oh
An excellent piece by two former military officers with radically different profiles.

It would be unwise to underestimate what large groups of ill-informed people acting together can achieve. -- John D'Oh, January 14, 2010.

Is there a link?

No need for one.

If Quirt says we should admire something, we should admire it. What more needs to be said?

Of course, but I want to send it to a few people who might be unaware of Quirt's reputation. ;)

I like articles like that. They make me think.
Death is simply a shedding of the physical body like the butterfly shedding its cocoon. It is a transition to a higher state of consciousness where you continue to perceive, to understand, to laugh, and to be able to grow.

Oopsies.

Link added.

By the way, Tom, it's far more likely that you will agree with it than Kathy ... or Mark.

Very clear logic. I agree with them on all aspects. (But you were probably pretty sure I would.)

This alone is why we need strong, engaged leadership in the White House, not someone who wants to pull out and sacrifice the gains we have realized in recent months.

I thought you would.

As it happens, for the most part, I do, too.

Indeed--the generals are correct. The military belongs to all of us, and THEY should be supported if you agree with the war or not. Also, America is in Iraq and we shouldn't leave the place in a mess.

Nothing is as effective as homeopathy.

I'd rather listen to an hour of Abba than an hour of The Beatles.

Sounds reasonable at a very high level, though I was hoping to see more in-depth analysis, more details on the proposed way forward.

Which parts do you disagree with?

Well, for starters, this part:

Quote:

It's time to discuss the way forward rather than prosecute the past. Congress must do the same, for our nation and the troops.

Overall, this will require learning from our strategic blunders, acknowledging successes achieved by our courageous military and forging a bold path.

I disagree with the first sentence of the first paragraph, and I believe the first clause of the second paragraph contradicts it anyway.

Well, I'd say for starters that learning from mistakes and prosecute the past are two really different things. The first is constructive--the second is destructive.

Sometimes, the only way to learn why mistakes were made in the past is to figure out who is to blame for past mistakes. Absent some collective recognition of fault, the past is likely to repeat itself.

Personally, I find that the blame-game is a disease, and considerably more time is spent pointing fingers than is spent in asking the more productive 'how do we avoid making the same kind of mistake again?'. This isn't just in the political arena, but is pervasive throughout life.
What do you mean "we", have you got a mouse in your pocket?
