I put my wink in for a reason. Religion was everywhere back in the 12th Century, so nothing could be separated, pretty much as in those perfect examples of freedom in the Middle East today. However, Magna Carta was primarily introduced because of political reasons - even the pressure from the Pope on reducing the power of the king had more to do with politics than it did with faith in God. Another freedom which had much to do with religion was the abolition of burning heretics at the stake. However, to try and give credit to religion for the abolition of a barbaric practice which was introduced by religious people in the first place might be considered a little disingenuous. |

If you think that was lashing out, you haven't been paying attention ... to my posts, or anyone else's. But then, I don't really think you thought it was lashing out. It gave you a tiny opening to beat the drum that you started in the other thread, about your pseudo-psychoanalysis of me. You wanted any opening at all, so you took it. Once again, I say ... physician, heal thyself. |

For any of you who are interested, here is Magna Carta in the original (borrowed from 1066 and All That, by Sellars and Yeatman) '1. That no one was to be put to death, save for some reason (except the Common People). 2. That everyone should be free (except the Common People). 3. That everything should be of the same weight and measure throughout the Realm (except the Common People). 4. That the Courts should be stationary, instead of following a very tiresome medieval official known as the King's Person all over the country. 5. That no person should be fined to his utter ruin (except the King's Person). 6. That the Barons should not be tried except by a special jury of other Barons who would understand. Magna Charter was therefore the chief cause of Democracy in England, and thus a very Good Thing for everyone (except the Common People).' |

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy | |

Thats a fair point, however it doesn't change the main point of my post, which is that, by modern standards, morality is only possible in a society that has ceased to take the Abrahamic religions seriously. |
