HOLY CARP!!!

Just out of curiousity, do your teachers use levels 1-4 on work they evaluate, or do they use percentages, or letters? |

We had a cross-panel literacy meeting today. Three of each grade 7, 8, and 9 math teachers. We were doing data analysis on raw grade 9 EQAO scores. (Sounds dull, but I LOVE analysing data! And I've developed a crush on the 50-something Bill Murray lookalike that runs these things, so that helps) Anyways, we were talking about the areas where our kids struggle (multi-step problems, communication for the most part). I noticed the difference in language - we talked about level 2s and 3s, and they talked about percentages. My understanding was that we were supposed to have a consisten marking system (for evaluation, not reporting) across the panels. We use percentages to report, as well, but use levels in evaluation (which is stupid - don't get me started). I assumed the HS panel was the same. Just wondering if it's just our highschool, or if percentages were standard. |

I never understood why they phased out A,B,C, and D, and phased in 4, 3, 2, and 1.

I can give you the educational theory behind it, if you're really interested (though not this evening - I need some sleep). The theory is sound, and I actually like the system (though when I run things, I'll change some aspects of it ) One of the reasons you don't understand why they phased out the letter grading system is because levelling took a while to phase in. When you were in elementary, it likely wasn't being done very well. It's getting better, but these things tend to go from grade 1 up, so highschools are the last to adapt. Anyways, I'll give you the rundown if you want it tomorrow. |

I can't imagine how replacing letters with numbers makes any difference. I'll listen to the theory with an open mind though, of course.
