About how much do you spend on Christmas?

On Sunday a friend of mine told me that her family's Christmas cost them around $9,000 last year. I was absolutely stunned at her disclosure, as we spend considerably less than that, and it got me wondering just how much does a family typically spend on the holiday?

So...what does Christmas cost you?

I guess I'd count it as $501-$1000 this year but that's mainly for myself.

Last year we got a bit carried away. Spent about $2500. This year, after feeling kind of empty in all the commercialism of Christmas, we vowed not to do that again. I estimate we have spent about $800, including our oldest's only present this year, a $209 camera.

Should I include the vacation we always take over xmas and new years?
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

I spend about 1000-1500 on gifts usually.

My wife and I don't personally celebrate any holiday, but we do buy xmas gifts for my family and hanukkah gifts for hers.

Last year we actually spend xmas with my family. It was the first time in almost 20 years my entire family was together for christmas, so we splurged and spent more than usual.
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

It varies. Every other year seems to be a "splurge" year with a big family gift.

This year it's a gift for my wife and myself in the form a new bed. The 21 year old Waterbed has got to go!

The kids vary depending on various factors like how big a bonus I can pay myself which also dictates our year end church/charitable bonus donations.

I only spend a little over zero because it is important to Jose.

I don't care for being shoved around and manipulate into thinking it is about something nice when it is really about sucking money out of you, or that imaginary stuff.

That said, it is a joyous time of the year for me.
What's to not like?
I get a two-month vacation from the mauls.
I get almost two paid weeks off work.
Lots of free fatening food and booze everywhere.
I like the light; the sun is low in the sky and gives the light a warmer quality and more visually exciting shadows.
I like the air; it is cooler and sharper.

There is nothing special about the "new year" either to me.
The starting point of all of today's calendars is just made up and agreed with by clumps of people.
But I still return the "Happy New Year" greeting.
That makes people comfortable.
Nothing wrong with that.

A couple hundred bucks (including Thanksgiving gifts my family gives).

They say the average person gives 20 gifts and receives 14.

Not sure how that's possible though...

Kenny, sometimes your a joy sucker. :(

Kenny is bitter at various parts of society. Shopping, TV, etc....and likes to voice his opinion.

Personally I think he's missing out on some rather positive experiences with his cynical crusade. :P

our kids are so cool. we don't like to shop and are very uncommercial. they are adopting our thrifty ways and are willingly trading gifts this year (altho we'll buy a few) for a little Christmas vacation on which they get to shop.

Improv and I don't give each other gifts. Instead, we identify something in our home that needs replacing or updating, and do that. This year it's new countertops for the kitchen.

We give gifts to our two daughters and two grandchildren. I come from a very small family and also exchange gifts with my sister and her husband and brother and his wife, and three nieces and two nephews.

Improv and I both give something to our mothers. He comes from a very large family, and exchanging gifts isn't done.

We also give something to the postman, the maid and hairdresser. Since I'm now retired, I don't have to give to the two school secretaries or any employees.

Excluding whatever we give each other, we spend around $1200 on Christmas.
You can never get enough of what you don't need to make you happy.

I agree with you for the most part. I hate hearing those gawdawful songs playing on the radio everywhere, and the myriad of smarmy commercials reminding me what The Holidays are all about. And what's with the tackiness? Many of the signs, bad gift ideas, decorations and songs are just tasteless.

This is going to sound ironic, after that rant, but it's true. A real nice thing about The Holidays, however, is that despite the cold weather it tends to put people in a good mood. We normally ignore strangers on the bus or in line at the bank but I think people smile at each other more around Christmastime. I don't care if it's empty, it's still nice when someone wishes you Happy Holidays for no reason.

well now.. the best music of the year is played on National Public Radio this month.

I LOVE IT.. all the wonderful choral pieces and music of the past and new commissioned music. i treasure the aural time. All the Handel, Bach, Vivaldi, great folk renditions..

maybe switching stations would help.

i make tons of cookies for gifts, will not enter a mall and express a desire for no gifts for myself.

Well, the choral stuff I don't mind at all, but for some reason they don't play any of it in Subway or the mall. If I hear Dominick the Donkey one more freaking time I'm going to cut off my ears.

On NPR?

Rather, don't you mean on your public radio station?

NPR produces a few news programs, Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and Weekend Edition.

apple and Daniel, was the music you are talking about featured during one of these 3 NPR news programs, or was it broadcasted on your local pubic radio station at a time NOT during NPR's programs?

Public radio stations are not NPR.

Oh holy crap. You have to find an online version of this song. I've never in my life heard anything as annoying and horrible. I looked it up after hearing it a couple of times just so I'd know what it was.
