There is some kind of weird political angle here.

The facts in the story show a declining rate of incidents, with an all time record low in 2007.

The headline should read something like "All time low - great work!".

Instead it says "Risk is high for 'catastrophic' runway crash".

The Confederate soldier was peculiar in that he was ever ready to fight, but never ready to submit to the routine duty and discipline of the camp or the march. The soldiers were determined to be soldiers after their own notions, and do their duty, for the love of it, as they thought best. Carlton McCarthy

The story also said as follows:

Quote:

the Federal Aviation Administration ... reduc[ed] runway safety incidents from a peak in 2001 ....

Then in fiscal 2007, which ended September 30, the incidents spiked to 370, or 6.05 runway incursions per 1 million air traffic control operations, almost returning to 2001's 407 incursions and 6.1 rate. An incursion is any aircraft, vehicle or person that goes where it shouldn't be in space reserved for takeoff or landing.

Unless there is some reason to believe that a higher number of incursions doesn't mean an increased risk of catastrophic incident, the lower number of actual serious crashes could be just sheer dumb luck.

if you ever get the chance to visit Gibralter, the main road onto the territory goes across the airport runway. When a planes comes in for landing, the stop the cars and people - the plane lands, then the people and the cars carry on across the runway. Although I am sure it is safe, it seemed unusual to be walking on the runway.

That's what happens in Shetland. There's a guy who sits in a hut (because it's so windy most of the time) and when the airport phones him he comes out, closes the barrier and waits for the (12 seater or something like that) plane to pass, and then opens the barrier for the cars again.
Death is simply a shedding of the physical body like the butterfly shedding its cocoon. It is a transition to a higher state of consciousness where you continue to perceive, to understand, to laugh, and to be able to grow.

Finally
About 5 years ago, I was headed back from north of the Cheddar Curtain, at about 5PM. I was headed south on I294, back in the days when they had toll booths. I was stuck in traffic at the Toll Plaza just east of O'Hare, inching my way forward to go through the iPass lane. As I looked to the East, I saw a white 747 on final, approaching runway 270 (I think L). Wheels down, flaps extended.

"Cool," I thought, "This guy's going to fly right over my Jeep."

I opened the sunroof, and sure enough, right over he came. I watched him descend toward the runway, and suddenly he pulled up, banked right, and headed North. I strained up in my seat, and saw that another airliner, smaller (737?) had taxied right into the 747's path. Had the 747 touched down, they would have collided as the 747 hit the 737.

One of the nurses at work, whose husband is a pilot for a commercial airline, says this is more common than you think, and more common than you'd want to know. A surgeon, whose husband is a pilot (international) for a big airline, confirms it.

Don't be an idiot.

On second thought, you can't help yourself, so go right ahead.

I'm not an aviation safety professional. Neither are you. I have to listen to what the professionals say. What the professionals are saying, uncontradicted, is that there is a high risk of a catastrophic runway collision.

Apparently, the FAA agrees.

Quote:

Then-Federal Aviation Administrator Marion Blakey stepped into that leadership void in August by calling an industrywide brainstorming conference to produce ideas for quick action.

In October, the FAA reported progress on steps recommended by the August conclave, particularly in speeding improved runway markings and pilot training.

But, I guess you know better. And, while you're at it, keep up the personal insults, they fit with your overall tendency toward blathering.

That's only one of the many skills you do not have.

Another is the ability to follow anything like a logical train of thought.

I would try to explain this to you but I’m pretty sure you would once again start howling at the moon and ranting about some other unrelated topic.

And by the way, what you did to Frank_W was really rotten. Why not take the rest of the day off and go take care of whatever has turned you into a raving lunatic bully today.

Oh, dry up. I did nothing to Frank.

Once again, I'm encountering someone who has started the name calling, and then lacks the cojones to deal with the consequences.

I'll tell you something about name calling, what's needed isn't "cojones".

What's needed is callous disregard for another person.

What's needed is a weak selfish person who has the ability to lash out without consequence.

What’s needed is a small man without the ability to admit a simple human mistake.

“Cajones” are definitely optional and usually unnecessary.

Yes, exactly - it takes no "cajones" at all.

Wake up.
