A lot of audio enthusiast complain that they are overpriced, and over hyped for what you get. What do you think? I am thinking in terms of home threater stuff, etc. I recently got their Companion 5 PC speakers - and they are really amazing, but a bit expensive. I am looking for some nice surround sound stuff for the TV now, so I am researching. |

Go to www.audioasylum.com and ask. Last time I remember Bose didn't release specifications for their speakers. Just trust us. Yeah, right. I have Bose speakers in my Audi (the premium stereo option actually) and they sounded alright when they were new. Now they just sound like the junk they are. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

Yeah, every forum seems to trash Bose - but they complement them on their marketing. The PC speakers I got are great - maybe $100 too much, but definitely better than the last $300 PC speakers I had before. |

I'm guessing your PC speakers are even smaller than the speakers in my car (one of the speakers is in the door, by the door handle, maybe about that big?). If you are going to buy "real" speakers, I wouldn't buy Bose. I've actually owned two sets of Bose speakers, other than the system in the car. I think the quality was better in the late 80's. I think direct/ reflecting technology is a scam. I really don't like that company or their products. What the websites are saying is that you can get much better speakers for the same or less money. There's LOTS of speaker companies. You should check them out. |

I don’t know what Bose currently offers in the way of home stereo speakers. I do know that they were big on designing speakers that take advantage of the reflective properties of sound. A friend of mine bought a pair of Bose 901 speakers some years ago. Don’t know if Bose still makes this model. They were expensive. The 901 has five sides with 9 speakers facing the rear and one facing the front. The 901s are supposed to be situated a few feet from a wall so that the rear facing speakers transmit the sound towards the wall. The sound waves then bounce off the wall and back into the room where the listener is. Basically, the 901s sound great if you crank up the volume. I don’t think they sound so good when the volume is low. You’ll need a powerful amplifier well over 100 watts to to take advantage of their power. If you ask me, the 901s are better suited for commercial use. They need a very large room and belong in an auditorium, discotheque, or a skating rink rather than your living room. |

We have a Bose Wave in the kitchen and I think it sounds great, but I am not that fussy. Between that and the computer, I never bother with the "real" stereo anymore. We also used one to play music at my mom's memorial service and it filled a large church with Ravel and Beethoven without distortion. jf |

![]() I loved my old Yamaha NS 655 3 way stereo speakers. Best speakers I ever owned. My brother owned a pair of BOSE 301's that he worshipped, but I thought did not sound as good as these, and these were far cheaper. The tweeter deflectors on the 301's added an interesting effect when used properly, kind of a percursor to surround sound, but you only got it in one point of the room. The closest thing I have to a "system" now is my Sony home theatre system, which serves the purpose of movie watching with OK fidelity, but it's certainly not audiophile. I don't have the time to sit still long enough to warrent having anything high end right now. |
