First Recital in 20 Years; Guess it had to happen eventually...

I'll be playing in my first recital in 20 years on Saturday. Last time would've been spring of '87.

On tap:
1. Scriabin Prelude in G Flat Major, Op. 11, No. 13
2. Scriabin Etude in C Sharp Minor, Op. 2, No. 1

They have a Steinway 'D' in the auditorium (Kilbourn Recital Hall at the Eastman School of Music), so that will be fun.

Hopefully the nerves don't get too bad

Good luck, Lindy!!

Was this mandatory or voluntary? Sadly, the main reason that I didn't take piano lessons as a kid when my mom tried to get me to was because you had to play in the school recital. I have terrible stage fright. I can't even play for my family.

I'm finding that I can't play for anyone else, either.

Very exciting, though, Lindy. Break a leg.

Thanks Opti -- mandatory or voluntary? Voluntary, but it felt more like 50/50. Even though it's not absolutely required of me as a student, they really encourage everybody in the school to participate. My teacher has been asking me to do this for a while now, and I've been putting it off. So he signed me up and then asked me to be sure it was ok. I think this was his way of forcing the issue! ^_^ .

That's ok. It's most important that you play for yourself. For me, the piano is an intensely personal thing -- great to get lost in some music after a long tough day. That being said, my 2 year old thinks I'm AWESOME!

Thanks for the encouragement Frank, Rosemary and Daniel!

Kathy -- what do you mean by "all recital"? This one will be a couple pianists and a few vocalists. My part will only last for 6-8 minutes tops.

The fact that it's in Kilbourn is a little intimidating. I've seen some amazing pianists there -- Awadagin Pratt, Marian McPartland, etc......

Well, come to think of it, the only people I've found myself comfortable with playing in front of are the kids I work with. They really do get into it, and it doesn't take much to amaze them, does it? ^_^

Sheesh, cyber sitter edited out the word "adult." (Cyber Sitter off - let's try again) I meant to ask if it was all adults performing. Is it your teacher's group?

They're beautiful! Do you play them? My teacher introduced me to Scriabin this year, and his music really clicked with me.

Ha -- that's funny.

Yes, it will be all adults in my session. They have separate sessions for the kids. This series of recitals is open to all students of the Eastman Community School regardless of who your teacher is.

However, my teacher also has "studio class" a few times each semester, where the students just play for each other. I really enjoy that. It's a little less formal.

I love Scriabin. I only fairly recently fell for him, too. It's funny how you can go for years without ever really clicking with a composer and then - boom - you're hooked. Those are two lovely pieces. They go well together.

PS: I had the good fortune of seeing Awagaddin Pratt perform here in Maine a couple of years ago. He gave a fantastic recital. He turned me onto another composer I'd never dabbled with before - Franck, and his Prelude, Fugue and Variation (swoon). He also did a great job of the wild Scriabin Opus 8, No. 12 Etude.

Excellent -- It was probably ~8-10 years ago that he played here in Rochester, so I'm a little foggy on the selections he played. However, I do remember that he played a mean version of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. IIRC, the rest of his setlist was unusual -- things you don't often hear.

I gotta check out the other Etude you mention -- ah, looking at it now, I recognize it as one that Horowitz played a lot. Quite a bit more difficult than my two :P .

Kilbourne is by far the best hall I've ever played in - played once in a master class, and accompanied some of the Met auditions there.

The sound is truly magnificent.

Whatever you do, enjoy performing and listen to the beautiful sound of those Scriabin pieces on a great piano in one of the best halls in the US.

Best of luck.

BTW, are you an Eastman student?

Phlebas - how did you have the occasion to play there? Did you spend time in the Rochester area?
In my defense, I was left unsupervised.

I went to undergrad in that area - actually closer to Buffalo.

I played there twice - a masterclass with David Burge (did the Chopin F minor Ballade), and I accompanied some singers doing the Met auditions there.

BTW, are you an Eastman student?

Thanks, Jon. Actually, I'm a student at the Eastman Community Music School, which is open to the general public. It's a branch of the Eastman School of Music. So it's a "continuing education" kind of thing for the adults. At the same time, it's a great place to send your kids for music instruction. Many of the teachers are faculty in the regular Eastman School (my teacher fits this category). You can get cheaper rates if you're willing to study with a grad student.

Kilbourn is a grand old place, isn't it. This will be my first time on its stage rather than in the seats!
