Thyroid problems?

Anyone here have thyroid issues?

I'm a little freaked out. During my doctor visit on Monday she found my thyroid was "extremely enlarged". They sent me for blood tests & an ultrasound (this morning). The doctor's office just called back and said there are "several nodules and a mass" on my thyroid. WTH does that mean?? I asked the nurse and she just said the doctor will be able to explain it better. Ok thanks. So, they set me up to see an Endocrinologist.

Has anyone ever had anything like this? Know anyone who does? Should I be worried? I know lots of people have thyroid problems so I'm hoping this is a no-big-deal-can-be-fixed-with-a-pill thing.

HOLY CARP!!!
My dad had thyroid problems last year. Seems like thyroid problems are generally very treatable.

He had to have part of his removed, and he takes a synthetic hormone to replace what his thyroid doesn't produce. The surgery was minor, his scar is almost invisible, and otherwise he just adjusts the dosage of his meds from time to time.

Sorry to hear that you're going through this though. No matter how treatable it is, these things are stressful.

Thyroid expert here...

There's a great history of thyroid disease in my family. My wife and I have auto-immune thyroiditis. We passed it on to at least two of our kids. The oldest (she's now 25) was so hyperthyroid that it was uncontrollable on medication, and when she was 15, she had her thyroid removed. She's done fine on thyroid replacement - no biggie.

I was diagnosed with a multinodular goiter back in, what, 95? Ultrasound showed many nodules, and I was just a bit hypothyroid. I'm on replacement that I take every day - no biggie.

Daughter #3 had a single nodule that was biopsied two years ago (single nodules are of more concern) and it came back positive for papillary carcinoma of the thyroid. She had a total thyroidectomy in 2005. Followup last year and again this year. Both were negative. She is on replacement therapy - no biggie.

If the followups had been positive, she would have been given radioactive iodine to drink to kill any remaining thyroid tissue. Two days in a lead-lined hospital room, and a 99% chance of a cure - no biggie.

If you have a goiter that's with lots of nodules, you're probably like me.

But....SEE YOUR DOCTOR!!!
