Music licensing; Anyplace to license stuff on-line?

Okay... Now that I'm getting more into multi-track recordings and stuff, a friend was asking me how I licensed my stuff.

If I produce an original song, is there someplace on-line to obtain some kind of license or... I don't know.... register it, somehow?

Just curious...

Since you aren't signed with any label or publisher, you'll have to do it yourself. It's easy, actually.

Thanks! I don't think I have anything worthy of being protected by that office, just yet.... Bookmarked it. :thumb:

Aint nothing wrong with copyrighting your art, especially if you plan on significantly sharing or selling it. This is just to ensure no one steals and profits from your work....that would be quite a mess if you are trying to prove originality and you dont have documentation. But there may be some "less formal" sites where you can upload your songs so that they are quasi-copyrighted in case you dont want to go through whatever red tape their might be for an official copyright. Sorry I dont know of any sites, Frank, but good luck! :thumb:

If you want to do it on the cheap, just put a copy of the recording and a typed out sheet of any lyrics in an envelope, mail it to yourself via registered mail, and then don't open it.

Mail it to yourself?

Won't the package get confused?

Yeah... I've done that with various pieces of poetry.

I should mail myself empty unsealed envelopes, so that the next time U2 or Prince puts out a song I can type the lyrics, stuff and seal the envelope with an old postmark.

Actually, that's why it's better to just pay the 45 bucks and do it right.

Yeah.... It's generally considered weak evidence, but evidence, none the less.

Years ago, I wrote this little ditty called, "Hey Jude." You may have heard of it? Yeah, there were these four English blokes who nicked it from me... That was a sad day... (I was very young at the time, and it was traumatic. I don't remember much...)

Don't you hate it?.. I once started collecting phone numbers. I ended up with so many of them I sent them to have them all bound into a book, and somebody stole the idea, and well.... you know the rest of the story....

It turned out to be a big seller, too.......

I seem to remember, a long time ago, making a piano track, and I was able to quickly and easily register it online, and was given a digital license, but I can't remember where, the name of the song that I did it with, or anything else about it.
