The fuzziness ... haven't figured that out yet.  I even went back a couple of generations in the drivers, and downloaded archived drivers, but it's stilll fuzzy.  As if I don't have TrueType fonts, or something.

Sounds like font smoothing. Go to Control Panel > Display > Appearance > Effects. There's a box for selecting either Standard or ClearType smoothing. Try switching it off altogether and see if that helps. I think ClearType is on per default, but if it's off, the new driver might have switched it back on.

Thank you thank you thank you, MRenaud! That addressed it.

It's almost back to normal-looking.

My kids play some online games, Frank, that do better with higher-end cards.

The best card you can get as an option on a Mac is not a particularly great gaming card.

Wait about an hour, Quirt. It's 11:11 here in Chicago.

They're still updating the store, so I can't see components yet, but the press release doesn't sound as if they are incorporating a major video upgrade.

Oops! I found a detail at PC Magazine that wasn't on the WSJ story.

an ATI Radeon HD graphics card

However, over the last several months, NVidia cards have blown the ATI cards away.
