If you want to laugh at ironic titles, think about the fool that named a truck factory Peterbuilt......... :D

What do you do when your K-whopper breaks down?

You get a new Peterbilt.

I don't see any irony at all in a book titled the Idiot's Guide to Faith.

Correction. . .

*Complete* Idiot's Guide to Faith.

That's what all the books in the series are called. You start out being a "Complete Idiot" and then you read the book and then you an expert on the subject.

Good heavens, do you really believe that? Personally I would be quite put out if something I truly believed in and had spent many years studying was put out as an 'idiot's guide' in a grocery store check out line.

Wow. Interesting reaction from people here. I'm thinking it's a slap in the face of those who believe, and the editor/publisher should be called on it, and yet those who are of faith are not seeing the irony.

Whatever. To each his own, I guess.

Strange response from those without faith, but it is kinda sweet.

If it were a Complete Idiot's Guide to Astronomy, I doubt Mark would be offended.

If it were a Complete Idiot's Guide to Finance, I doubt Jon-Nyc would be offended.

If it were a Complete Idiot's Guide to Law, I doubt Quirt or Jack or R2 would be offended.

If it were a Complete Idiot's Guide to Opera, I doubt OT or Diva would be offended.

If it were a Complete Idiot's Guide to Russian Oil Production, I doubt Alberta would be offended.

What that tells me is that all you people without religious faith seem to be embarrassed for those of us who do have faith. What I am missing here?

I guess what you're missing is that (at least I, I wouldn't presume to speak for others) don't see your faith as a fact based entity like finance, russian oil production, etc. I see it as a personal belief, not some quick facts to be perused at the check-out counter. I view personal beliefs as something developed over some time, with much contemplation and personal introspection.
Whatever, I'm making way too big a deal about this. If it doesn't offend you , and just makes me question the sense of the publisher, then it's obviously not a big deal.

Also, part of what suprised me is tom's suggestion that after reading an 'idiot's guide', one becomes an expert on the given subject. Certainly doesn't offend me, but I'm not buying that.

I think his calling it being an "expert" displayed a tongue firmly rooted in the cheek.

And I never took it to be "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Ivorythumper's Faith". Faith is a sort of knowledge, and falls under epistemology in general.

Yes, and perhaps Kenny's opening comments were likewise lodged firmly in cheek, and that seemed to have been missed as well.

I'm with the librarian on this one.

I avoid all of those books, I find them insulting. When I got back into piano, B&N had the complete idiot's guide to piano, but little else stocked. I went to music stores and amazon and found intelligent books on the topic.

If I were to study religion, I would ask some respected people in the field for legitimate books on the topic. Like Dewey or Big Al.

Until then I'll wait until they publish the Complete Idiot's Guide to educating oneself on a topic without buying cutsie orange books on the topic.

Indeed! I should have put "expert" in quotations.

I had thought it might be presumed.

The book series are just an overall sketch of a number of subjects that all start our with the assumption that you know nothing about the subject when you start reading.

If one is so strong in their faith, they wouldn't care about what some book says. I mean, I have some pagan beliefs and when I've shared them with loved ones I had people laugh in my face. There is a book that says bad things about my beliefs. It's called The Bible.

See, now I'm confused.

I thought (as MS stated well) that Kenny is making fun of the cover because it says "Idiot's guide to faith" because he thinks it takes an idiot to have faith.

But now it seems Kenny didn't know there was a "Complete Idiot's Guide to..." series?

If so, that latter point makes sense for Kenny to get a kick out of it...although I figured most people knew about that series of books. They seem to be everywhere when looking up a subject in the library or bookstore. If I'm curious about a certain topic, I find those books to be a quick and helpful guide to learn the basics.

I knew about the Dummy series, but not about the Complete Idiot series.
I guess, for some reason, I just don't browse the Complete Idiot bookshelves. (Hey, that's kind of funny too.)

I'm just a partial idiot.

You know, a thought can occur to a person apart from his own beliefs. (Then again maybe I'm being too generous here.)
You are shooting the messenger by jumping on the "Kenny Hates Religion, and this is proof" thing.

It never ceases to amaze me how often this happens here.
Person X states item Y, and everyone jumps on him because of their established opinion of person X and item Y.
It's like, let's not discuss the issue, let's beat the same dead horse liberal/conservative polarize the world crap.

It is a very very small way to use a brain.
