I love grilling in the summer! :woot: We grilled all summer long when I grew up in South Dakota. We often grilled steak, and it was always served with a pile of buttered toast.

IT and I grilled beef & veggie kabobs ( ) the other night, and I sensed something was missing from an otherwise tasty experience. Then I made buttered toast -- perfect! I almost always make it when I have steak as well.

:rightarrow: Is buttered toast with steak a Midwestern thing?

:rightarrow: Also, what do you consider a must when having steak? A certain sauce? Side dish? Drink?

Interesting cultural question.
No, no toast with steak here. Salad and maybe baked potato (if not bbq'd).
Salad is crucial though.
Drink? Red wine.

i know some restaurants will serve steak with toast or "Texas toast," but we also had it that way at home.

we also had steak with salad and usually iced tea to drink.

There is a grill-it-yourself steak house in WI called Prime Quarter that's proud of their texas toast. THat's the only steakhouse I've ever been to that had toast with steak though. Toast + baked potato wouldn't leave enough room for steak! The baked potato that comes with a steak is about the only food item I regularly do not finish in a restaurant meal. Toast would be much easier though.
As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good?

dry toast goes with steak tartare (see my previous thread on the subject, and im still alive with no gastroenteritis after that episode...)

but otheriwse, i like my cooked steak, with potatoes on the side.

maybe a pita and hummus as an appetizer.

No, the closest I get to toast with steak is a good dinner roll sometimes.

But, I will often make peanut butter and jelly toast for dessert after dinner. It's something that I picked up from Dad, who used to do it all the time when I was a kid. It wasn't until several years ago that I stopped and thought about how odd that must seem to other people, and I asked him why he did that. He said that when he was growing up, his family couldn't ever afford any "real" desserts, so his mother would make them peanut butter & jelly toast as a sweet substitute. I kind of liked that explanation, so now I just chuckle when someone sees me doing it and thinks its weird. ^_^
