That's a bold choice to cut off half of the 12 and 6 like that! |
| As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good? | |

I hardly ever wear a watch. If I were to splurge and get a good watch it would be a Breitling. Breitling watches start around $2,500.00 This one is gorgeous! It costs about $4,500.00 ![]() I could never justify spending that much on a watch no matter how much money I had. |

Daniel, Thanks. (I do not mean to be argumentative here... just expanding a bit more on my own thoughts on this subject.) I went back and re-read katie's post (I think you're referring to this post). I can understand "different people like different things," yet "like" is a rather different concept that "pride." I "like" my piano, I "like" my house, I "like" my car, I "like" this new pair of shoes I just bought... but I don't see any of this as issue of "pride." I can see one being proud of hardwork or triumph over some adverserial conditions leading towards the ownership of an inanimate object (i.e., "I am proud of my house because I worked very hard to be able to afford it," "I am proud of my shoes because I elbowed my way through 28 other women to get this last pair in the sales bin," "I'm proud of my Mercedez Benz because it reflects my financial success in life", "I am proud of this TAG watch because it's given to me by my employer to recognize my 25 years of outstanding contribution to the company -- i.e., I'm proud of my 25 years of outstanding contribution"), but I'm still having trouble understanding "pride" that stops at the object itself. |

I appreciate and understand the pursuit of perfection - wherever you find it. It may be in painting at the limits of your vision, raising a child in the best way you can, living a conservative life so your kid can go to the best school or inherit a legacy, growing the perfect lawn, having a finely made shovel with perfect balance, maintained, sharpened, oiled and stored carefully after each use, hitting a baseball out of the park, a singer working for years on forming optimum tone, or a fine watch with details seen, appreciated and understood only by a few. There is nothing wrong with caring very deeply about something that many people just don't get. That guy with the $15 watch may have one of those rare $5000 fishing poles. People vary. |

Breitling is nice too. Ax, generally having pride in the object itself has other connotations to go along with that - like how you were able to get the object, what special meaning it has for you, etc. I mean, the only person proud of the actual physical watch without symbolism is the guy who crafted it - but the buyer has other things associated with it. |

I tried an IWC Portugueser in rose gold a few weeks ago. Simply stunning - as was the price of £10,000. Given a lottery win I'd buy one; until then I usually wear a timex that looks quite like Jon's Portugueser - without the two inner dials & with black hands (and has indiglo )Also tried a Rolex Daytona last month which a friend just bought - it was OK but for £5000 I'd buy something else. Blancpain are worth a look. Don't buy a divers watch unless you really need the 200m depth guarantee - a cousin has one and he tells me each service costs a fortune. The only watches I know of that would almost certainly be an investment if you have the cash are made on the Isle of man by Roger Smith, a student of the famous Dr. Daniels(new Omega movement etc.) For all the accuracy of quartz, it's like comparing a digital piano to a concert grand. I just love the tica-tica-tica-tica of my old Omega, and find winding it strangely enjoyable. Regards Andy |

Welcome AndyD. I agree with you about the service on a diver's watch. I hear men talk of this. My jeweler comments too even (like to me). I forgot to mention I like your IWC too Jon. Classy. Quite. I'd like a watch in rose gold someday. There's a specific one I like now. So cool. |

Crash .. seriously, are you brand hunting or is there something specific you're looking for? What do you want your watch to look like? Does it have a strap, stainless steel, white/yellow gold, a skeleton watch maybe, heavy, light or what? |

To me, fine watches are like masterpieces in miniature. Plus, I am hard on watches. I love my Tag Heuer for all the reasons that JBryan put forth. It's like buying tools: You can by the same $hitty tool five times, and it will cost you more than buying a quality tool, once. I also like having a Tag Heuer over a Rolex, because the Tag isn't flashy and "in your face," the way a Rolex is. Like I said, it's like the difference between diamonds and pearls: Diamonds are flashy and can be really gaudy, but pearls are always stylish and have an understated elegance to them. I don't personally care, but if status means anything to you, Prince Andrew and Tiger Woods also wear Tag Heuer watches. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

Look on the first page of this thread. I posted an image of mine. Google "Tag Heuer Aquaracer," for images of it with a black face and bezel, as well. |

WVA-430TDE-1A2VER Titanium![]() Solar powered, radio-controlled so it's as accurate as the radio signal it's synchronised with (which is more accurate than any Rolex) plus it's made of titanium, and is 100m water resistant. It's a simple watch that looks great, isn't expensive, isn't ostentatious, is lightweight (can play piano whilst wearing it), is ultimately accurate (even self-corrects for summer time), never needs winding or any maintenance. It just sits on your wrist and does its job. Why would you want anything else? |
