Watch question

Once again I am looking for a really nice watch, so I'd like some opinions on a few things.

First, are there any watches that maintain their value? Not to resell of course, but it's nice knowing that something you bought isn't worth 1/5 of its value in 3 years.

Are authorized dealers always best? There seem to be some decent prices on eBay, but I really don't want to risk getting a fake.

Also are brand new watches better, or some that are perhaps a few years old and have maintained their value?

Buy brand new. Buy from an authorized dealer. You can't go wrong with Breitling, Tag Heuer, and (if you simply MUST have overpriced bling), Rolex.

I'm a watch fanatic...

This is mine. I wear it for everyday stuff, as well as diving:

My other, but it needs a new battery:

Is a Rolex really badly overpriced? That's what I am liking the most right now, so I am going to shop around.

Naw, you can get a Rolex on the streets of Hong Kong or Shanghai dirt cheap. Just don't let it get wet.

I narrowed it down to either Tag or Rolex, and I had around $1,500 to burn for a watch. The Tag went for $1,200, and a similar watch, (as far as I could tell) in a Rolex cost $3,500. The price tag nearly gave me a frickin' nosebleed... :lol2:

Hahaha.... I've seen those same watches in Mexico! They usually go for around $100, but you can generally talk them down to $60. ($50, if you're REALLY good at haggling!) LMAO!

I too enjoy watches.
What Frank says. But get to know a jeweler - authorized dealer. True addicts have many, and do upgrade. Some consign their 2nd tier back to their dealers. Thus you can save money this way.

Baume & Mercier - okay; Piaget & Cartier (dressy, expensive batteries though .. sheesh), Corum - okay (coins & nautica are still cool) as well. Chopard is too girly for you Crash & way overpriced.

I never understood the fascination with expensive watches. I used to wear a Pulsar that my wife gave me for Christmas in 1980. I wore it until 2003, when a horse kicked it, breaking the crystal, bending the face and hands - ruined.

I currently wear a similarly-styled Seiko that cost about $150 and has been nothing but reliable. I wear it every day, everywhere.

depends on how much you want to spend and what you want to use the watch for (i.e., time keeping, appearance, etc.).

my sister-in-law's father is an international businessman so wearing a very nice Rolex and driving a limited edition Mercedes is part of his package.

This was my Army watch. Not the one in the photo, but that model. Mine's scratched up and still has Kuwaiti sand in the bezel: LOL

Not so expensive, but damn rugged, and it stood up to a hellacious amount of abuse:

I don't just want something for practical reasons like telling time, but I also want something I can be proud of - so a Rolex is really nice. The price isn't really that big of an issue, I just don't want to get ripped off or overpay, so I need to research it more. I don't need diamonds and all that hoopla, but just something really nice that I can have for a long time, like a collectible of sorts.

I am so adjective that I verb nouns!
What a watch as status symbol really says is that the one who wears it is not rich enough to not be concerned about time.

I'd bet Warren Buffet and Bill Gates wear Timexes, if anything.
The dogma lives loudly within me.

Except a Timex will do it better. The quartz crystal will lose much less time than any spring watch.

Expensive luxe watches are just an ego trip. Rolexes have among the highest repair rates of any watch.
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

I have a Tag that needs to be set twice a year for daylight or standard time. Otherwise it tracks atomic time perfectly not losing or gaining even one second.

Show me a Timex that can do that.

You know, different people like different things for different reasons.

There's just no way I'd go out & spend a load of money on expensive editions for classical music. I buy used, hunt down Henles in garage sales, used book stores, etc. Same for books. Tattered & used. This is how I like them.

Yet some people like watches. Some like shoes. Some like cars. Boats. Pianos. Sunglasses. Cameras. Tools even. I have a neighbor who spends loads on brandname tools .. things like screw drivers. He talks of craftsmenship. Have to respect his tastes with it.

We are all different. This is what makes us interesting.

You pay that much for a watch, and it can't even set itself for Daylight Time? You got jipped.

Sheesh .. regardless .. it takes me 3 days at least to re-set myself to daylight savings time, despite my watch.

Nope. And it even loses a few seconds every few months.

It's a huge hassle resetting it, but I guess you get what you pay for.
