How much would you pay?; ...a serious question

A hypothetical but serious question:

If *this weekend* you were somehow given the opportunity to see Chopin himself play 3 of your favorite pieces (written by Chopin of course), and it would be a private show on the best piano in the world, and you could bring anyone you wanted (like your family or spouse or something), how much would you pay to see it?

Nothing. I don't think that at present, Chopin would be up to the challenge.

89, you'd make more sense if you presented your hypothetical question about a *living* composer or performer.

If it were Alfred Brendel and he was playing my three favorite LvB sonatas, for example, and it was just for me and whomever I wanted to bring along, AND I was richer than God himself, I'd pay something in the six figure range.

Nah, the whole point is to see how much you would pay to hear one of the (if not THE) greatest composer(s) of all time.

Well, let's see, Mrs. Dewey & I spent about $150 each to see a really good concert recently. I suppose for a performance like that, I'd go another hundred each. He'd probably be worth much more than that, but not out of my pocket.

Well, I paid $26 each for two tickets to hear Garrick Ohlsson play Rachmaninoff's 3rd last weekend, so I'd probably go that high. Too much higher and I'll wait to see it when it comes out on DVD. :D

Wow - to see Chopin play 3 pieces in person? I was expecting at least 4-figure numbers! I'd probably pay up to 800 bucks...

If I could secure the broadcasting and/or recording rights I'd pay everything I have, and whatever else I could scrounge.

The problem, 89th, is that in all likelihood, he couldn't play his own pieces as well as some of today's pianists. Chopin was known as a composer, not necessarily as a pianist. Yes, he was a well received pianist in his life, but not anywhere close to the best of his time. Plus, pianos were very different in his time. Different tone, different action, it would definitely interfere with his playing.

This question is like asking how much you would pay to see Tenessee Williams star in one of his own plays.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.

I saw that, too! Saturday night. Wonderful show. Somehow I forgot to request seats on the left, so I couldn't watch his hands, but still wonderful.

89th -- if Chopin were giving his proceeds to a really good charity (say, healthcare and plastic surgery for dead, famous musicians who hope to rise again) I'd pay more. I often buy tickets at charity auctions, paying well over the ticket price and then don't feel guilty about coughing up so much cash. I'd go four figures, then, and invite friends, and make it charity event, too.

It's not that I'm that nice of a person, I'd just need to find a way to justify it. <_<

So, he is now a decomposing composer? :)

Now that we got that out of the way, the next question is what 3 pieces would you have old Freddie play if such sort of thing was possible.

Hmmmmm.

Gotta get my money's worth so can't pick any of the myriad of short and sweet stuff that he has, so it's gotta be some heavy pieces.

Andante Spinato with Grand Polonaise Brilliante

Ballade 4

3rd Sonata in B-

Luke's Dad is right, Chopin at his technical best with the equipment they had back in the day, could Not even come close to the emotion and error free playing today's concert pianist's have taken his music.

Excuse me Markie,

in case you haven't been paying attention, there have been a couple of other recent threads I've had occasion to read what I call stupid jokes.

I've had to forwarn other posters that continued posting of such stupid jokes can and will hasten the addition of their names to my appointment book. I'm sorry, I just have a low tolerance for this sort of thing.

Please don't make me pick up my pen sir or decomposing just might become a term you can begin to become very familiar with.

Mwaaaaa haaaaa haaaa haaaa!

Now THAT was a clever joke Markie!!

Yes, I did. Would have been too funny if three of us from TNCR were there. Wonder if I'd recognize you, if you sat down next to me. Probably.
