HOLY CARP!!!

Skip to the bottom for the punch line if you like. A few months ago I dropped a tape measure on the hood of my car. Tiny little ding but it was the first I ever had on the hood of my '97 Civic. I can live with it, I figured. A few weeks ago I was getting something down from shelves in the garage and dropped an (empty) plastic storage box for Christmas ornaments. It left a large dent in the middle of the hood - I'm talking about a half-inch deep with the total depression in the metal about the size of a baseball. Have to live with it, I figured, gritting my teeth. Every day I drove to work and looked out over that hood I saw it. It was painful. Then the other day I noticed that the storage box rebounded and made a much shallower but larger depression off to the side. A few days after that I was surfing Craig's List and thought I'd search for "paintless" dent repair. A guy's name popped up, his listing said he had experience and his work was guaranteed. Decided to give it a shot as it could not be worse. He quoted me $100-175 over the phone. The guy showed up with a little cart and an umbrella fixed to it so he could work in the shade. He had all sorts of long metal tools and suction thingies and color charts. He worked on it for about three hours. When he was done he buffed the entire hood. Other than tiny scratches in the paint, I cannot see any dents or waves in the hood. It if freakin' smooth as the day it was when I bought it. He said the charge was $170. I happily paid him that plus a $10 tip. He even told me that he saw two other very small dents in the leading edge of the hood that he took out gratis. I love it when something goes better than you could ever imagine. I thought about having him work on some of the door dings but on closer inspection I just have too many (and none that are particularly noticeable). Now I want to get the whole thing detailed in preparation for my new wheels. |

Neat! I wonder if he was Indonesian. They have "ketok magic" shops there in Indonesia which do car repair work (for the car body, not the engine) using only magic. Their shops are closed off so you cannot see what they are doing - however, there is a suspicious sound of hammers that comes from behind the walls. Their work is good, so I guess it does not matter how it is accomplished; magic or another means.

I had a bunch of hail dents taken out of my car with paintless. It looked great until my wife plowed into it backing out of the driveway. That repair was not paintless. |
