Posting PMs - Gender Check

Someone may PM you if they wanted to be very nasty and offensive but didn't want others to know.

Basically, if you are being harassed, privately would you feel it is okay to let the community know what that person was doing?

I'd say always wrong.

Anyone remember 'Habla'? He was a short lived troll, who PMed me asking about my forum, and then posted this:

why would someone publicly post a PM, assuming the PM is an intentionally private conversation between two parties?

I voted for always wrong. Though they are pretty few in number, and rarely contain more than some simple off-topic small-talk, I don't even feel comfortable saying who I've sent/received PMs with. Prefer to err on the side of caution, that's all.

Oh, wait, I guess an exception would be if you asked the person in another PM if it was OK, or if the PM was a threat of some sort.

Why not just make up PMs and post them? How would anyone prove they are fake?

There is a line we cross when we go from "I will believe it when I see it" to "I will see it when I believe it".

Well we cross posted. Hmmm.
What about telling the person no further communications are desired? if not,
What about forwarding the messages to a moderator then??

Consider also, that if someone sends Person X a nasty message, and Person X responds in like kind, then it's just 2 people having an argument.

I voted that it was permissible before I read Kenny's first post.

So I want to change my vote to "never acceptable".

I originally voted permissible, because I was assuming that the person sending the PM gives you permission.

But I change my vote after reading Kenny's parameters, because even if someone is being very rude and offensive in a PM, it's still a private message, and all you have to do is ignore the person and keep their PMs quarantined.

If you discuss the PM with the person whom sent it, and they give you permission to post, then it would be okay in my opinion.

However, it is not okay to post if you do not have permission from the sender.

Kenny, has someone sent you a nasty PM or something?

I rarely PM anyone. I don't send nasty ones (well.... there *was* one.... :D ) but I do think that if someone feels compelled to say something to someone else in private, then that's where it should stay - private. After all, there's a reason it's called a Private Message...

Besides, as you may have noticed..... I think if you've got something nasty to say to someone, you should say it publicly so everyone can enjoy it..... :D

No Lar.

Some newbie recently asked what the rules were so I started a thread about rules.
One issue that came up was PMs.
I thought more women than men were opposed to posting PMs in the open forum so I started this poll.

Seems to be the case, so far.

Question: what is that "Forward PM" button used for when I read my TNCR PM?

I thought the consensus being built in this thread indicates that would be a TNCR ethical no-no as well.

I voted for permissible under certain circumstances, because I'm a moral relativist. The objective is most good, least harm and I can think of circumstances where "snitching" serves a greater good. Example: I receive a PM from Timothy McVeigh forewarning me not to be in Oklahoma City.
