Wait...so we should complain about no tolerance, but not tolerate those who don't tolerate tolerance. Seems a bit hypocritical to me.... |

I have read unadulterated glee at this man's passing at another forum. I have seen unadulterated glee in photographs. I am not (nor have I ever been) a Jerry Falwell fan. I actually think that Larry Flynt had a good point to make. Falwell was someone who abused his power and position to preach a position of intolerance and, sometimes, hatred. Nevertheless, the hypocrisy of the so-called "tolerant" in rejoicing his (or anyone's) death is apalling. You are defined by your deeds, and those who rejoice at his death have just defined themselves. Shame on them. Edit to add: Miriam, you are beginning to understand. |

You know I like you Dan, so please take this seriously when I tell you that comment like this show that you don't have a clue about the "right". For vast segments of the right, Falwell meant nothing other than being a political bedfellow (a chaste one at that ;)), able to mobilize a voter segment in the 80s. It is not at all a question of being shocked that Falwell's death has not been met with unadulterated sadness. It is not even a question that no one expected the Left to dance on his grave, or to show their blackheartedness. There is in fact nothing shocking at all about the way Falwell has been treated in his death, and it only confirms the personal hatred the left held for the man. |

Yeah, and I also caught your snide, unneccessary comment. If it's not a PM, I can join in a conversation whenever I wish, and, last time I checked, I had previously posted in this thread anyway. Just because you're being backed into a corner doesn't mean I can be. |

Well I like you too IT in a hunting and fishing kind of way but you know when I said "the right" I was making a joke-- I meant there is no monolithic "left" or "right" . Your comments about the left and blackheartedness, are the kind of generalization I was protesting. But you are right ( ) I don't know much about the right. I guess this part is meant for Miriam, for you, and for George: "Hate", "Intolerance", "Bigotry" is hate, intolerance, and bigotry against minority groups (eg gays, Jews etc). Condemning gays and Jews is not the same thing as showing a lack of tact on a posting board. You people wear me out. ![]() |

When someone says PERSONALLY to someone else you miss the irony and you chime "yeah pretty sad"- you are the one who made a snide comment. As far as being backed into a corner- you are too funny. I don't even remember what I wrote. Can we please let it go? |

Those words cannot be applied in regard to an individual? Certainly the post I made about dancing is hateful and intolerant.
No, it's not the same. But it reflects the same mindset - and you can't minimize the hatred of Falwell (and remember, I was no fan, as I posted) by calling it a "lack of tact." Call it what it is: hatred. |

I really don't have that sort of distinction in my vocabulary. Hate is hate. Bigotry is bigotry. Intolerance is intolerance. No need to try justifying anything because you want to excuse others in their hatred, intolerance and bigotry. |

No, in essence I don't think it is the same mindset. I'm sorry. We'll just have to disagree. A political reaction to a public figure who was political by his own definition and the mindset involved in bigotry against minority groups are different issues IMO. |

Just for further clarification (sp?) I just thought that those people performing that act are sad, not you, or anything else. Basically, I was agreeing with the latter half of George's statement. Ok. I'm done. Promise. |

So it's OK to rejoice in his death, right? It's OK to say things like "Hallelujah" in response to his death, right? (waiting for the inevitable Hitler analogy) |

Has ot a thing to do with right or left. Has to do with common decency. You don't rejoice over the deaths of others. You just don't. I didn't feel the emotions that were expressed there when Tim McVeigh shuffled off this mortal coil. |

I assume from lack of reporting or conjecture to the contrary, Jerry died with his boots on and his flag at half mast, rather than in the saddle with his assistant Megan (or Bob), right? |

Let me beat this one about a bit.... If you look at America as the "New Israel" or the Christian-version of Israel (God's Chosen People) as some fundamentalists do, it's not a very far stretch to superimpose the parallels of the OT onto America...if Israel turned away from God, Israel was punished, therefore if America turns away from God, America will be punished. On a more individual basis, that is the same theology as applied to gays and AIDS. By practicing homosexuality, gays have turned away from God, therefore God has allowed AIDS to devestate much of the gay community. Same for 9/11....all three illustrations have a common starting point - disobediance leads to correction. As to the other point about the Anti-Christ being a Jew, that's pretty common stuff among the Revelation folks. As to whether or not these are the End of Days...who knows? |

Doomsday sayers, or more politely, Revelation folks like Falwell, have been spewing the same paranoid nonsense that the AntiChrist is amongst us and the end is near since at least the Middle Ages. Falwell, like the rest was just another in a series of charlatans. |
