Democratic Underground. Feast your eyes and bask in the warmth of the love. I've asked this question before: can anyone point me to such a "mainstream" right wing hate-filled site. "Mainstream," you ask? If Elizabeth Edwards reads and posts there, it's mainstream. |

Take a guess where these quotes come from..... "I'd say that he's gone straight to H, E, double hockey sticks; except I don't believe in it - at least not the way he did. Yea, anyone's death is a sorrowful event - but I can't say I'm any more sorry than I would have been at Hitler's demise... His kind of thinking has caused more deaths and ruined lives than Hitler, et al." "hallelujah." "I'll miss him. We need a few good people to demonize." "Falwell was a VERY evil man. Now granted, to the best of my knowledge he didn't personally kill anyone - but he promulgated a brand of hatred and intolerance that has killed millions over the ages - Theocracy, and Theocracy of the very worst sort; monotheistic Theocracy." "My grnadma always told me that if you can't say anything nice, you shouldn't say anything at all. So all I have to say is: No comment." "its historical FACT that ideologies like his have killed more than the Nazis did. Or another way of putting it, his ideology has more than a passing relationship with Nazism." "Good f'in riddance. Think of Christ, or even just your conception of Christ. Then think of Falwell. Then reconcile the two." |

As you can see, once again we have evidence proving that modern liberalism is a mental disease, and the ideology of the left, and with it the bankrupt democrat party, is based on hatred and intolerance. |

It is beyond belief to me that the folks who hate Jerry Falwell et al for their beliefs and activism do not see that it is no different than any other kind of hate. They are every bit as vile as a Klansman. |

OK, Larry, since you turned this into a political thread with your gratuitous quote from some anonomous lefty blogger, I will shed a little light.... The Reverend speaks.... After 9/11... "The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen'" In response to Brown v. Board of Education.... "If Chief Justice Warren and his associates had known God’s word and had desired to do the Lord’s will, I am quite confident that the 1954 decision [Brown v. Board of Education] would never have been made…. The facilities should be separate. When God has drawn a line of distinction, we should not attempt to cross that line.” Regarding Bishop Tutu after a visit to South Africa.... "I think he's a phony, period, as far as representing the black people of South Africa." Regarding homosexuals.... "AIDS is the wrath of a just God against homosexuals." Regarding Martin Luther King.... "I do question the sincerity and non-violent intentions of some civil rights leaders such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Mr. James Farmer, and others, who are known to have left-wing associations." Regarding Bill Clinton (from Wiki).... In 1994, Falwell released the straight-to-video documentary "The Clinton Chronicles: An Investigation into the Alleged Criminal Activities of Bill Clinton." The video connected Bill Clinton to a theoretical conspiracy involving Vincent Foster, James McDougall, Ron Brown, and an alleged cocaine-smuggling operation. Despite the theory's having been discredited by all major investigations, the video's sophisticated production techniques served as effective exposure, and sold over 150,000 copies.[21] Funding for the film was provided by the Citizens for Honest Government, to which Jerry Falwell paid $200,000 in 1994 and 1995.[21] In 1995 Citizens for Honest Government paid two Arkansas state troopers to make allegations supporting the conspiracy about Vincent Foster. These two troopers were Roger Perry and Larry Patterson, who also were paid for their allegations in the Paula Jones (See: Troopergate) claims.[21] In March 2005, trooper Patterson was convicted of lying to the FBI about an unrelated incident.[22] Falwell's infomercial for the 80-minute tape included footage of Falwell interviewing a silhouetted journalist who claimed to be afraid for his life. The journalist accused Clinton of orchestrating the deaths of several reporters and personal confidants who had gotten too close to his illegalities. However, it was subsequently revealed that the silhouetted journalist was, in fact, Patrick Matrisciana, the producer of the video and president of Citizens for Honest Government.[21] "Obviously, I'm not an investigative reporter," Matrisciana admitted [to investigative journalist Murray Waas], "and I doubt our lives were actually ever in any real danger. That was Jerry's idea to do that ... He thought that would be dramatic."[21] NOW, you tell me who is filled with hate???? jf |

It depends on who shed it and their agenda. I also know almost nothing about Mr. Falwell. I read an article online, I think it was CNN, that listed many of your items, then made it clear that Mr. Falwell had apologized for many of them. Then I went and watched the evening news they listed all the nonsense, but never mentioned the apologies. Just like you. |

I agree with Jack. I feel sorry for his family, but most of what he spouted was intolerance masquerading as morality, and though their comments may be crass, I'm not surprised so many people on the left hate him. I can easily imagine him railing against abolition and miscegenation in an earlier era. His comments about 9/11 were unforgiveable. I for one am not shedding any tears that he's gone. |

Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool. I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss! - Cecil Lewis | |

Falwell made the mistake of confusing certain established cultural traditions for actual tenets of faith. It's a very easy thing to fall into. We all want to find justification for our own innate beliefs; this is equally true with religious and non-religious people. For the religious ones, it becomes an issue of reading holy texts with an eye to justify preconceived positions (we had a big discussion about "eisogesis" a while back here). This has happened in every age, in every faith, in every coutry and every location. It's human nature. Frankly, Falwell's confusion of certain conservative political/cultural issues as being fundamental tenets of Christian faith came in no greater measure, and with no greater proportion of error or doctrinal distortion - than what is just as frequently seen in liberal Christians' positions, and political expressions of their faith. |

Did someone mention Larry Flynt? Upon hearing of his death, Flynt released the following statement to Access Hollywood: "The Reverend Jerry Falwell and I were arch enemies for fifteen years. We became involved in a lawsuit concerning First Amendment rights and Hustler magazine. Without question, this was my most important battle – the l988 Hustler Magazine, Inc., v. Jerry Falwell case, where after millions of dollars and much deliberation, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in my favor. My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. He would visit me in California and we would debate together on college campuses. I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling. The most important result of our relationship was the landmark decision from the Supreme Court that made parody protected speech, and the fact that much of what we see on television and hear on the radio today is a direct result of my having won that now famous case which Falwell played such an important role in." |

Sure do. Try a few of his sermons: http://home.trbc.org/index.cfm?PID=12968 Next, please consider that Thomas Road has 24,000 members, an elementary school, a college and a wide and varying ministry. Being part of the SBC, they actively support missionaries in every corner of the globe. And, if you'd like to know what they believe, here it is: Our Doctrinal Statement We affirm our belief in one God, infinite Spirit, creator, and sustainer of all things, who exists eternally in three persons, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. These three are one in essence but distinct in person and function. We affirm that the Father is the first person of the Trinity and the source of all that God is and does. From Him the Son is eternally generated and from Them the Spirit eternally proceeds. He is the designer of creation, the speaker of revelation, the author of redemption, and the sovereign of history. We affirm that the Lord Jesus Christ is the second person of the Trinity. Eternally begotten from the Father, He is God. He was conceived by the virgin Mary through a miracle of the Holy Spirit. He lives forever as perfect God and perfect man: two distinct natures inseparably united in one person. We affirm that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity, proceeding from the Father and Son and equal in deity. He is the giver of all life, active in the creating and ordering of the universe: He is the agent of inspiration and the new birth; He restrains sin and Satan; and He indwells and sanctifies all believers. We affirm that all things were created by God. Angels were created as ministering agents, though some, under the leadership of Satan, fell from their sinless state to become agents of evil. The universe was created in six historical days and is continuously sustained by God; thus it both reflects His glory and reveals His truth. Human beings were directly created, not evolved, in the very image of God. As reasoning moral agents, they are responsible under God for understanding and governing themselves and the world. We affirm that the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, though written by men, was supernaturally inspired by God so that all its words are the written true revelation of God, it is therefore inerrant in the originals and authoritative in all matters. It is to be understood by all through the illumination of the Holy Spirit, its meaning determined by the historical, grammatical, and literary use of the author's language, comparing Scripture with Scripture. We affirm that Adam, the first man, willfully disobeyed God, bringing sin and death into the world. As a result, all persons are sinners from conception, which is evidenced in their willful acts of sin; and they are therefore subject to eternal punishment, under the just condemnation of a holy God. We affirm that Jesus Christ offered Himself as a sacrifice by the appointment of the Father. He fulfilled the demands of God by His obedient life, died on the cross in full substitution and payment for the sins of all, was buried, and on the third day He arose physically and bodily from the dead. He ascended into heaven where He now intercedes for all believer. We affirm that each person can be saved only through the work of Jesus Christ, through repentance of sin and by faith alone in Him as Savior. The believer is declared righteous, born again by the Holy Spirit, turned from sin, and assured of heaven. We affirm that the Holy Spirit indwells all who are born again, conforming them to the likeness of Jesus Christ. This is a process completed only in Heaven. Every believer is responsible to live in obedience to the Word of God in separation from sin. We affirm that a church is a local assembly of baptized believers, under the discipline of the Word of God and the lordship of Christ, organized to carry out the commission to evangelize, to teach, and to administer the ordinances of believer's baptism and the Lord's table. Its offices are pastors and deacons, and it is self-governing. It functions through the ministry of gifts given by the Holy Spirit to each believer We affirm that the return of Christ for all believers is imminent. It will be followed by seven years of great tribulation, and then the coming of Christ to establish His earthly kingdom for a thousand years. The unsaved will then be raised and judged according to their works and separated forever from God in hell. The saved, having been raised, will live forever in heaven in fellowship with God. |
