HOLY CARP!!!
Just heard that myself. I am curious to see if the those opposed to his policies, beliefs and statements can show a modicum of graciousness.

I expect to see a list of his most infamous quotes. Anyway, that would be fun to see.

Rest in peace, Reverend Falwell.

I know the hospital where they took him very well. I did work for that health system for a couple years. Good facilities.

According to the article, he's not dead. He was found unconscious.

Has his status changed, then?

Oh. Well... I didn't agree with his political agenda, and I flat disagreed with most of his views. By the same token, I realize that he was important to and admired by a great many people, so I pass along my condolences.

I don't know what to make of him - some of his statements were beyond the pale.

Anyway, rest in peace Jerry.

From the Daily Kos:

Oh I know what you are thinking...

How can I be so disrespectful and unsympathetic. Jerry Falwell was a human being! Think of his family! Well, okay I am sorry to his family for their loss.

But if there is a God and if there is divine justice, then I hope that hypocritical bigot; that riotous, elitist, power-hungry, dissembling bigot is on the fast track straight to hell.

His time has come.

Actually, his time had come back in '05 but he made a deal with the boss. Yeah, can you believe that?

We gave him 2 more years.

I obviously did not agree with him on many issues and there are many times I thought he was an asshole. However, his family and friends have my condolences.

That is SO cool that Larry is frequenting ultra lefty blogs just so he can post that tripe here and pretend that someone like Quirt or me posted it.

Larry, you have outdone yourself.

I guess the tone in this thread was too respectful for you.

How people lived is how they will be remembered when they died. To some Falwell was a hero, to many he was a jerk. There is no moral issue for feeling for those who loved him and also being happy that he no longer will be spewing his opinion (if that's how you feel about him).

He earned his legacy whatever it is.

Jack, what in the hell are you talking about? Where did I mention either you or Quirt in that? Or are you so in tune with the Daily Kos that you could have written everything that shows up on it?

You're one screwed up dude, Jack.

I one were to go to the other side of the pond, such as it were, one would see sentiments similar to the Daily Kos.

That's a humanist for ya.

One thing perhaps we all agree on (Devil socks not included) is that we are happy he is meeting his maker.

Hey Larry, completely OT I know but I just read a short story by a guy called Algernon Blackwood, called "Running Wolf" and thought you might enjoy it. The story was written in the early 20th century I think so it's out of copyright. You can read it here:

Recommended for others too of course :)

Falwell was an interesting guy. I met him once, many years ago, when I was in high school in the '70's. One of my best friends attended what was then Liberty Baptist College, and he worked for Falwell for a long time after graduation. I went down with him & his family just to see the place. We met Falwell - he knew the family well; five of the six kids were, or would eventually become, students there. We sat in on two Sunday morning services - the first was the "standard," non-televised service for the Thomas Road Baptist Church faithful. The one that followed was the one being taped for television. It was kind of odd: During the first service, Falwell delivered a sermon, and interacted with the congregation in a very warm, personable, almost intimate way - the way I'd want a pastor to be. His delivery style had none of the bluster that people associate with him from seeing him on TV. His actual message wasn't really very different, it was just that he was more of a "real" person, if that makes sense. He was connecting, in a non-televised, pastoral sense.

But when the second service started, and the lights went up for the taping, he took on a very different "aura," the booming personality that most people think of. I don't mean to say that he was less sincere, or phony, in the television taping, he was just... exaggerated. Less the person I'd just heard during the previous hour.

Any time I thought of Falwell since then, I always thought about that difference - the "two Falwells" that I'd experienced.

My version of Christianity was closer to Falwell's back then than it is now. There are some positions that he espoused that I still agree with, while on other issues, I'm sure he'd consider me at risk of eternal damnation for some of my beliefs. He's certainly made some wacky comments and made some mis-steps in his ministry. In the end, he probably didn't make any more mistakes than anyone else; it's just that since he had the courage to try to affect change in the direction closer to his own understanding of his faith, and that his efforts were so bold, that his humanity and his flaws became similarly magnified. The great architect Daniel Burnham said, "Make no small plans; they have no magic to stir men's blood and will probably themselves not be realized." For better or worse - and in reality, probably for both - Falwell was just the Fundamentalist embodiment of Burnham's philosophy.

Rest in peace, Jerry.
