HOLY CARP!!!

The main city, Avalon, is threatened. Its going to be a long night. It is about one hour's, or two, boat ride from us. I can see it from my teacher's home. It is such a peaceful place from a by-gone era. I hope it is not gone by tomorrow morning. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-ex-ca...=la-home-center ![]() A 400-acre brush fire on Santa Catalina Island was moving toward the city of Avalon this afternoon as authorities were evacuating some residents and preparing to ferry additional fire crews to the island using a military ship. The Los Angeles County Fire Department said the fire was reported about 12:30 p.m. about five miles east of the island's airport. The fire was moving east and through light to medium brush toward Avalon, which is located near the southeastern tip of the 76-square-mile island. Many residents and visitors were leaving their homes and hotels and headed to beaches, the harbor and other locations as smoke grew thicker and flames became visible from the center of town. "The fire is moving very quickly toward the town," said Leslie Shannon, who went to St. Catherine of Alexandria Church in Avalon after she was ordered out of her condominium. "Every person who can fight the fire is out there fighting it right now." "We came over to the church because it was a place to go," Shannon said. "Everybody is leaving their homes." Pete Woolson, Avalon's assistant city manager, said there was a precautionary evacuation on the west side of town only, including the hospital, school and warehouse area. "What I'm hearing from the chatter on the radio, they're getting an upper hand on it now," Woolson said. "I'm observing the fire bombers, they're working and it sounds like they're making progress. I'm pretty hopeful." Officials said the fire was being held back from populated areas by a dirt road that runs around the perimeter of Avalon. Bob Rhein, media relations director of the Catalina Island Conservancy, said he could see the flames and several aircraft dropping fire retardant on the blaze from his location: aboard the Catalina Express in Avalon Harbor for a return trip to the mainland. "It's smoky and there's lots of thick ash dropping right now," Rhein said. "I can see an entire hillside going up in flames, but it's still quite a way from Avalon." Rhein said the west side of town was being evacuated, including the Avalon Canyon area north of town, near the golf course. "There is smoke and there are helicopters all over the place," said Andres Tejeda, a worker at the Catalina Country Club Restaurant near the city's golf course. "We are trying to close the door and get out of here." At the Hotel Catalina, manager Ivan Leyva was gathering some clothes and other belongings as he prepared to escort a group of guests to a nearby beach. People were not scared as they prepared to leave the hotel but were keeping an eye on the smoke flowing overhead, he said. The fire is "not that close to town but it's getting a little windy," said Leyva, 19. "This is the first time this has happened." Lisa Bradley, 61, owner of Brown's Bikes rental, said some friends were leaving their homes and heading toward the town's harbor and beaches. "I'm going to get things from my house and come back closer to the beach," said Bradley, who was waiting for the return of a few bikes before closing up shop. "You can see the flames on the hill now." Dan Teckenoff, publisher of the Catalina Islander, said his priorities are getting out a newspaper and then evacuating. "There's an eerie glow over the town. We need to leave," Teckenoff said. "I need to pack my things and move out of my house." The island is noted for the bison that roam the hills in the fire-damaged area. "They're probably running for cover," he said. About 100 firefighters are on the ground or en route to the island and a hovercraft from the Marine base at Camp Pendleton is scheduled to depart at 6 p.m. with 60 additional firefighters, according to fire department officials. One firefighter was injured and being treated for smoke inhalation, according to authorities. The city of Avalon, which covers only about two square miles, has a year-around population of about 3,500, according to the city's website. About 85% of the island is part of a nature conservation area. |

You know, I've been to Catalina a ton of times but never to Avalon. Two Harbours and Little Harbour. Little Harbour is a 30 minute bus ride from Two Harbours and is one of the best places to camp - the buffalo are over there. We go to Two Harbours every summer with a bunch of friends. My wife and I talk about a weekend in Avalon, but have yet to do it. Hopefully the marine layer will slow down the fire tonight. Santa Catlina island - owned by the Wriggley family (of chewing gum fame) and handed over to the Catalina island conservancy for all to enjoy. |

As of 10:40 PM last night 4000 acres had burned in only 10 hours. It is now 9 hours later and I'm sure that many more acres have been consumed. The fire is still burning. Pics from LA Times. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

How do you transport firetrucks and heavy equipment over to Santa Catalina island to fight the fire? Call the Marines at Camp Pendleton and ask if you can use these things: ![]() |

I do believe 100,000 acres have burned in Georgia and Florida. No big deal. Only California fires are a big deal.... |

Cripes. It was on the news here tonight....I got the impression it's still burning, only defense is from the air. How devastating. I live on an island myself, and after an unusually dry summer (and we have large forest areas), it's pretty frightening to think of this happening. |

[brief hijack] Here's how the AP (via Fox) is reporting the story: Health officials warned the elderly, small children and people with breathing problems to stay indoors, although some areas were not as smoky Thursday. No one has died in the fires and just one firefighter had minor injuries. Authorities has been hoping the year's first named storm would bring rain. But the remnants of Subtropical Storm Andrea were not promising much rainfall relief only up to an inch was expected. Jim Harrell, a spokesman for the Florida Division of Forestry, said the situation hadn't changed throughout the day Thursday. But another official says there is concern about winds picking up and fanning the flames. As of Friday, the number of active fires has dropped from 236 to 223, with about 140 square miles - over 87,000 acres burnt. Seven homes in the state were destroyed. Other large fires are burning in Bradford and Collier County. Meanwhile, the Council on American-Islamic Relations says Florida Muslims are offering special prayers for rains at mosques on their religion's day of rest. In northern Minnesota, high wind fanned a fire around the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, prompting more evacuations. =-=-=-=-=-=-= What's that got to do with fires? [/hijack] |
