Grill recommendations, anyone?

HOLY CARP!!!
After years, I finally have a house with a patio, which means only one thing... at last, I can do some summertime grillin'!

I was thinking of a propane gas grill, preferably under $500... any favorites?
Civilisation, I vaguely realized then - and subsequent observation has confirmed the view - could not progress that way. It must have a greater guiding principle to survive. To treat it as a carcase off which each man tears as much as he can for himself, is to stand convicted a brute, fit for nothing better than a jungle existence, which is a death-struggle, leading nowhither. I did not believe that was the human destiny, for Man individually was sane and reasonable, only collectively a fool.

I hope the gunner of that Hun two-seater shot him clean, bullet to heart, and that his plane, on fire, fell like a meteor through the sky he loved. Since he had to end, I hope he ended so. But, oh, the waste! The loss!

Whoops! Didn't know this had been addressed before. Sorry.

I guess like Axtremus I prefer the convenience of gas. I also personally don't like that sour coal taste with the charcoal briquets.

I've heard good things about the Weber Genesis, but it does seem very spendy. My dad had a Broil-King that lasted for years, but every year it seemed like something minor would go wrong with it and I don't want to put up with that aggravation.

Yeah, yeah, everyone thinks I'm crazy, but haven't you ever noticed a kind of sour/metallic taste with grilled meat when you use charcoal briquets? I haven't ever noticed it with gas grills or wood charcoal.

I guess when it comes to grilling, I'm liberal! :P

I never noticed it with briquettes. I use lump charcoal now anyway.

We have not have any problems so far. Other than replacing the gas tank when iti s empty, it has run fine. Other people that I know that have the Weber Genesis have also had good luck.

No, but I don't use charcoal lighter fluid. I use a chimney:

I had a nearly disastrous occurrence with a propane bottle that caught fire some years ago, so I went back to charcoal. The thought of a five gallon propane bomb on my patio gives me the willies.

IMO, the best of both worlds is if you can find an older Ducane cast aluminum gas grill and a box cast aluminum charcoal grill (craigslist has one in Tulsa but the cheap bastard won't ship it to me even if I pay). Both are, IMO, superior in cooking and durability. Cheap too.

I have an inexpensive round Brinkmann ($89) that grills nicely and is very miserly on gas. But I use a grill year round, even in deep snow. I do not want one that I have to go put a cover on later. If it can't take the elements I don't need it.

I've heard that Webers last for ages, and if you ever do have a problem they are very good about fixing it. If I could afford it, I would defitnitely get the Weber, but it's about $200 more than grills with comparable features. :(

Get whatcha pay for. There's features and then there's features. Take a look at how it is built.

Hmmm, good point. Maybe the taste I'm noticing is from the lighter fluid.

Exploding propage gas tanks aren't common, are they? :hair:

Hey, I use that too. I prefer the taste of charcoal grilled meats. I don't find it to taste sour or metallic.

Several years ago on a summer afternoon we heard a loud boom sound. I honestly thought a parachutist had landed on the roof. I ran outside and fully expected to see some guy on the roof. Then I noticed a plume of smoke one block over and three blocks up. It looked a bit like a mushroom cloud.

Turns out the sun had shone thru a basement window and caused an over-filled propane tank to explode. The house burned badly enough that it was torn down.

The tap on a freshly-filled five gallon propane tank leaked and caught fire - the weld joint at the base of the tap, not the valve or the joint with the flexible gas hose. I happened to have just gotten out of the hospital for back surgery, and couldn't bend over far enough to reach the tank, which was roaring like blow torch. I shielded myself behind a hot tub and trained water on it to keep the tank cool until one of my neighbors came over and smothered it.

Never again...

My husband won't grill on anything except a Weber with lump charcoal in it. He says it give the food the best flavor. I'm just happy I get out of cooking on that particular night!

Does anyone remember the Hibachi? I used to have one 20 years ago or so that cooked really nice steaks. Haven't seen one in a long time and last time I googled it I got no joy.

After reading about those propane tank stories, I'm seriously considering a Weber with lump charcoal!

I remember Hibachis... with the grills so close to the charcoal, they were great for searing steaks, but they were cheap little things... we'd always end up getting a new one every year.

JBryan, have you seen this? http://www.sonofhibachionline.com/

Right now I use a weber grill that is no more than 12" across (a lot like the hibachi) and has three short legs that make it sit close to the ground. I put it on top of my old 24" Weber that I don't use any more because I don't grill enough food at one time to justify the cooking area. It works quite well but I would like to be able to adjust the height of the grill like I could with the Hibachi, especially for chicken and fish.

I remember Hibachis - my folks had one when I was a kid. They used it to cook right on the picnic table and the wood underneath burned.
