1. Beautiful pieces appropriate for an advanced beginner? I'm looking for pieces now that I can figure out, but that are rewarding to hear and play. 2. An online place to buy sheet music? 3. A good piano light (I seem to recall an earlier discussion on this). |

1. Beautiful pieces appropriate for an advanced beginner? I'm looking for pieces now that I can figure out, but that are rewarding to hear and play. How advanced? You might try Alfred's 4th and 5th book of Classical Themes.. some very nice stuff. 2. An online place to buy sheet music? mannerinos.com - they are a local store and they know all there is to know about sheet music. If you saw the store you would never believe they had a website this decent. It is a family business. 3. A good piano light (I seem to recall an earlier discussion on this). I prefer to use a torchiere placed two feet or so to the right of the bench. It bounces a nice soft light off the ceiling and eliminates shadows and bright spots that come from the light souce being too close to the sheet music. |

As far as lights go, I tried a cheapo flourescent from Office Depot. Cheap indeed. It had a long cantilevered arm that just wouldn't stay put. Also, the flourescent was just a bit hard to direct without glare in my eyes. I ended up (last month) buying a cheapo clip-onto-the-music-desk lamp. If you go to froogle.com, you can find something like that. It takes two 40 watt bulbs (the aquarium type, so you can get them anywhere) and I paid about $85 for it. Comes in black or brass; Mrs. George wanted brass. Sheet music... (thanks for the tip, Mik!) I've bought from Hutchins and Rea. They have fast shipping but a difficult search engine to use. Also from Sheet Music Plus. I was recently looking for a piece by Manuel Ponce, and the only place that had it was The Sheet Music Store. I ordered it, and it has not yet (4 days) arrived. |

J.S. Bach's Prelude in C. Get a book of Burgmueller. (I can recommend mine when I get home if you remind me.) Amazing musical for how easy it is to play. Light: I prefer a very bright light pointing up to the white ceiling above the keyboard. It is shadowless. With direct light the black keys cast shadows onto the white keys This make the black and white keyboard pattern less clear. Clearly making out the black and white key patterns at a quick glance is essential. |

Thanks, Kenny.
I'll remind you. I'm going for rewarding music right now, for encouragement. Then I'll start lessons again and will be ready to be pushed. |

Rosemary, if you like a little Spanish flavour, Ibeniz's Espaņa Op. 165 might be fun for you. 6 quite short pieces (the famous tango in D is the 2nd piece). Might be not challenging enough, but on the other hand, might be fun material to get your fingers warmed up. The Prelude is quite beautiful. Espaņa Barenboim recording |

Apple -- love the free sheet music, thanks. So far no one (not even my mother) has been impressed with my playing. Need to improve.

Correction...all the free sheetmusic you might want is on my hard drive. Just mail me and ask ! I don't recommend buying ONLINE if you can go to a shop. Browsing on site is much more enjoyable than ordering without having any idea what the scores look like. Besides, in some store there a re also pianos so you might try to check if the music is at your level. |

Rosemary FWIW I think one of the most valuable things a teacher does is help select new music to learn. Too hard is not good. Too easy is not good. Good selections will contain valuable things that you are ready for. |

Yeah, Kenny, I agree. The problem is that right now I'm selecting a teacher. |

These first 2 "Library of" books have a lot of music. Maybe over a hundred pieces each. You can download most of it for free, but the book is handy to have. Library of Piano Classics (Library of Series) Music Sales Corporation $19.95 A nice collection of classical favorites Library of Easy Piano Classics (Library of Series) Music Sales Corporation $21.95 A nice collection of easier classical favorites with simpler arrangements The Piano Handbook: A Complete Guide for Mastering Piano (with CD) Carl Humphries $29.95 This is a good book for a beginner, although it has more text and less music than the Alfred's. It is more oriented toward classical music. I really like the selections in this book. It is kind of expensive but it comes with a high quality CD. |

Thanks, Radu. Do you have ?? I found an easy version of Fur Elise, and I do enjoy it. I tired to download the "real" version for free, but I seem to be missing a page (printer down). Couldn't find Eccosaises. Copper, thanks for the suggestions. Over the next few weeks I'll hunt these all down and have some fun. R2 |
