HOLY CARP!!!
|
So I finally went to the walk in clinic after being sick for 2.5 weeks. My regular doc is out of town. I have bronchitis, a double ear infection, a sinus infection, and he also said that it looked like it was moving into my eyes (coming home and looking in the mirror, I see why he said that - my one eye is all reddish yellow and a bit swollen. Nice.) He prescribed Avelox. Told me not to eat dairy within a couple hours of taking it, and sent me on my way. Pharmacist said the same. I took one. Looking online at this drug (which I'd never heard of), it says that you shouldn't take it if you have a heart condition. Usually I can ignore that stuff, as tachycardia isn't usually in the same group as what they're talking about. I keep reading, and it says that one of the side effects is rapid and/or irregular heartbeat, which is exactly the heart problem I happen to already have. ![]() I hate walk in clinics. Of course, I've already taken my daily dose, so we shall see.

So, this I see..... edit to add: Looked at their website: http://www.avelox.pharma.bayer.com/en/phys...ty_profile.html Cardiovascular problems are "uncommon" (unless your potassium level is low), on the order of 0.1-1% for the benign things, and 0.01 to 0.1% for the serious stuff (lots of ventricular arrhythmias - not a generic tachycardia like you said), and less than 0.01% for the REALLY BAD stuff - and that's in patients who have significant heart disease. You'll probably be OK. |

I'm sure I will. I have Supraventricular Tachycardia. I'm a little pissed that he didn't even ask. But I haven't had good experiences with this clinic, so I'm not surprised. Interestingly enough, he also didn't ask me if I'm currently taking any meds. I'm not, but I have been taking Aleve for the pain caused by the sinus infection. Apparently, no more of that!

As an aside: What a coincidence. I just looked up supraventricular tachycardia because I have a claimant that has it. My medical dictionary said it was a heart beat between 160-190 bpm. The medical records for the claimant don't have her getting over 90. Anyway - can you drink alcohol with that? |

Kincaid .. George is the doc & can answer this better than me ... but from my experience with cardiac kids, SVT is not a disease where the individual lives 24/7 with an increased heart rate .. but rather that the condition of SVT occurs from time to time, or with precipitating factors, and lasts for varying periods (seconds to minutes to hours/ in & out of it / sometimes > 24 hours even). That is as long as the individual maintains a half decent cardiac output with it. But while in SVT, over time, an individual's cardiac output may become compromised, thus drugs or interventions (cardioversion, vagal manuevers) are needed to restore a normal rhythm & rate. So Kincaid, it's not surprising the your claimant's medical records show a lower heart rate ... a person who has SVT is not in SVT all the time. I know plenty of people with SVT who drink. None though would drink knowing they were in SVT. They'd likely be going to Emerg. There are likely certain drugs to avoid while drinking and if one has SVT. Perhaps SVT medications have such precautions. I'd have to ask someone. (I'm a retired nurse .. what I say is often not heard .. don't sue me)

I drink - it doesn't do anything to the SVT one way or the other, as far as I can tell. I've only gone to emerg once for it, when I had an "attack" (my mother called them "episodes" which just sounded too creepy for me) when I was pregnant. Other than that, I just ride them out. My "attacks" last for 3-4 hours generally. They managed to catch it on a holster monitor (they often can't - I got lucky on a 72 hour monitor and they caught it at the end). My heartrate topped out at just over 230, from what I recall. I don't take any meds for it - I also have lowish blood pressure, and many of the meds they use for SVT also lower blood pressure, so when I'm on them, I feel slightly woozy all the time. I don't have problems enough that I worry about it too much. Eventually, I'll get the surgery, but it freaks me out, so I'm in no rush! |

Oh shush, Larry. I LOVE my family doc. He's out of town. The clinic is annoying, and I hate it because I'm used to having very personalized care, and the clinic is SO not like that. Has nothing to do with how the health care is paid for - I'm sure you have hacks in the US, too.
