Washington D.C. Hotels; should I be scared of the south west?

HOLY CARP!!!
My husband and I are hoping to plan a trip to DC with our two young boys sometime this year.

We have Marriott points and can stay there for free. There are two Residence Inn's that we're lookin at, one is in DuPont Circle, and one is on 333 E St, SW.

I lived in DC in college for a summer. My recollection was that I tried to steer clear of the South West in general. I recall DuPont circle as being close to the metro, and fun.

My husband thinks that I make up everything from my college years. He doesn't trust my opinions. I'm fairly confident in my assessment, but it has been a least a few years since my glamorous summer there (I lived in the male freshman dorms of AU -- shudder shudder shudder).

Thoughts?

I've stayed twice at the one on E st. within the last 5 months. First time, dead of winter and it was freekin 77 degrees in DC.

This location is right on the edge of the riffraff. You just have to walk a couple blocks to the east or south and you meet it. Going in the other direction though takes you to the Mall. It's just a couple of blocks away as well. 5 minute walk to US Capitol.
Problem with this hotel though is the ongoing construction next door as well as a main railroad line that runs right next to the hotel.

Don't know about the one in Dupont Circle, but I'd venture that it's the better bet.

It's been years since I've been there, but I believe DuPont Circle would be better. It's lovely in that part of the city if I remember correctly and maybe close to the zoo.

When working in DC I always steered clear of SW if I could.

R2, my client has a good friend who lives in DuPont. He was actually down there last weekend. It's actually a great location right now, right on the metro line (so you have easy access anywhere) and some great shops and restaurants as well. If you are staying at a "Marriott" (my client's favorite hotel chain, btw), there is also the "Key Bridge Marriott" right next to the Key Bridge on the Virginia side. If you're not familiar that bridge leads right into Georgetown, so you'd need a car if you stayed there, unless you wanted to taxi everywhere.

But in my professional opinion, as a person who is often on the road for legal consulting, without a doubt I would stay at the DuPont Marriott. You'll have a great and safe time.

EDIT: Looking at Google Maps, the only Marriott I wouldn't stay at is "D" which is in what my racist client likes to call "Souf-east".

The city is divided, ever so nearly, into quarters.

I do the rewards thing too.
I stayed at the Marriott at Metro Centre in July.

It has an older grand piano in it's lobby. But it's in sad shape. One of the lid hinges is gone. A front leg is real wobbly. Found these things out at 4 a.m. one morning (ooopsies :whome: ) . But otherwise, it was a good Marriott. The food is decent in their dining room, and affordable compared to restaurants close by the hotel. There's cheaper (family) food within walking distance too. I walked everywhere RM2 . All the sights are within blocks.

DuPont, definitely DuPont.
The problem with having an open mind is that people keep trying to put things in it.
