As far as I'm concerned, the Best of Imus was behind closed doors yesterday, when he apologized to the team. It's our culture that we forgive those who screw up and apologize - sometimes, we do it too easily or quickly, but we do it in any case. in his case, he screwed up. He's human. He'll survive, and almost undoubtedly do radio again. Hopefully, he's learned something from this. Hopefully, lots of people have. Hopefully, it will focus the debate in other areas where the same kind of racist hate goes on, without condemnation. What happened to Imus wasn't over-reaction, it was commensurate with his foul. If others have made the same foul without being called out for it, it's time to treat them the same way Imus has been, not to let him off the hook because of them. |

True, but if that had been Tavis Smiley that uttered the same words as the infamous Imus quote, what would be the reaction? Even today, post-incident? |

I fel really stupid now, because I don't know who Tavis Smiley is. But I'd suggest that the question isn't what would happen, but what should. I'm not a big fan of letting someone off the hook for a wrong, just because someone else got away with it. Doesn't work for me when my kids try it; doesn't work for me when someone else tries it. |
