HOLY CARP!!!

In the Snoopy thread, several people suggested that double standards are all wrong by virtue of the fact they are double standards. --- It's okay for adults to drink alcohol, but it's not okay for kids to drink alcohol. It's okay for adults to drive cars, but it's not okay for kids to drive cars. It's okay for adults to have sex, but it's not okay for kids to have sex. It's okay for women to go in the ladies' room, but it's not okay for men to go in the ladies' room. It's okay for the police to arrest someone and keep him in jail, but it is not okay for a civilian to arrest someone and keep him in jail. --- My point is, double standards aren't necessarily bad. They are often backed by particular reasons. One can debate the legitamacy of those reasons -- but then it is the reasons that are bad (or good), not the fact that there is a double standard. |

(you see what I mean about the value of a college education?) Look Sam, just read what I’ve been leaving at the bottom of all my posts lately. It’s obvious, so obvious that it shouldn’t even be noticed or questioned. |

usually when people play the "double standard" card in debates it strikes me as an oversimplification for the purpose of rhetoric. We can take a case in point, the Imus thing. Does it hurt a black person more when a white person calls them a racist name, than it would hurt a white person to be called a "cracker" by a black person? If so, does the existence of a double standard make sense? Should there be a double standard for punishment of teachers who have relations with their students, depending on the gender of the teacher? Since young girls would be damaged way more than young guys by an encounter with an older man/woman respectively, does that make a double standard appropriate? Then we have the issue of how to codify "appropriate" double standards into law, and whether that makes the laws less enforcable or creates more loopholes thereby being bad for society in the long run. So many variables! One "double standard" argument I've always found compelling is the drinking age vs age of enlistment thing - old enough to risk your life fighting for your country but not old enough for a beer... But even something like that could be argued against if someone could establish statistics about alcohol being extraordinarily dangerous for 18 year olds compared to 21 year olds, while enlisting at 18 might be no more dangerous than enlisting at 21. |
| As a good person, I implore you to do as I, a good person, do. Be good. Do NOT be bad. If you see bad, end bad. End it in yourself, and end it in others. By any means necessary, the good must conquer the bad. Good people know this. Do you know this? Are you good? | |

Actually, my impression is just the opposite: that the notion of a single set of truths for everyone is slowly dying, and it's being replaced in modern democracy by the idea that truth depends on what each individual thinks is true or right for himself or herself. If there is any single truth that is being pushed, it is the truth of freedom to do and believe whatever you want. People will see someday that children and adults are not equal -- and they will try to make children and adults equal, so that children, too, can make their own decisions. |

Sam I agree with you that there are different truths for each of us in our own lives. Discerning these and living by them as best we can is the challenge of living that faces everyone. But this is not a double standard. This is individual choice for one's own life and cannot be used to judge our interactions with others who have their own truths. Your truths end where the rights of others begin. It simply cannot be true that, in our supposedly melded society, it is OK for one group to use derogatory language toward themselves while others from another group have their careers ruined for doing the same thing. This is especially true given the demand of the former group for 'equality'. |
